Hypertrophy of masticatory muscles

Hypertrophy of masticatory muscles

Many female friends hope to have an oval face. But if our chewing muscles are enlarged, our cheeks will appear very wide. Hypertrophy of the masticatory muscles is caused by our daily chewing. Nowadays, many people try to slim down their faces by eliminating the hypertrophy of the masticatory muscles. In order to help you better deal with the situation of masticatory muscle hypertrophy, today we will give you a detailed introduction to the relevant knowledge about masticatory muscle hypertrophy.

Hypertrophy of the masticatory muscles is a type of mandibular angle hypertrophy, with obvious hypertrophy of the mandibular angle, eversion, square face or trapezoidal face. The mandibular angle is prominent and the two sides are asymmetrical. The width of the upper and lower face is not proportional, and the distance between the two mandibular angles is too wide. Therefore, the occurrence of masseter muscle hypertrophy is generally believed to be related to people's chewing habits and eating habits. For example, it may be related to eating hard food frequently or having the habit of snacking or chewing gum. Some people also believe that masseter muscle hypertrophy is related to genetic factors. In fact, from a clinical point of view, there is indeed a phenomenon of familial masseter muscle hypertrophy. Masseter muscle hypertrophy is often accompanied by mandibular angle hypertrophy and mandibular angle eversion.

reason

1. The human body's chewing muscles include the masseter muscle, temporalis muscle, medial pterygoid muscle, lateral pterygoid muscle, etc., so the occurrence of masseter muscle hypertrophy is generally believed to be related to human chewing habits and eating habits. For example, it may be related to eating hard food frequently or having the habit of snacking or chewing gum.

2. Masseter muscle hypertrophy is related to genetic factors. In fact, from a clinical point of view, there is indeed a phenomenon of familial masseter muscle hypertrophy.

3. The causes of masseter muscle hypertrophy are often accompanied by mandibular angle hypertrophy, mandibular angle eversion, etc., so masseter muscle hypertrophy is clinically called mandibular angle hypertrophy or benign masseter muscle hypertrophy.

examine

Benign hypertrophy of the masseter angle is a common facial deformity in the Oriental population. The facial shapes of this group of people are often in the shape of the Chinese character "风" or "用". Lower 1/3 of the face is noticeably wider. In severe cases, the mandibular angle protrudes backward and downward, and some are accompanied by a shortened lower 1/3 of the face. When the patient bites, the obviously thickened and raised masseter muscle cords can be seen or touched. Most cases are bilateral, and a few are unilateral. Asymmetry is common in bilateral cases, while the asymmetry is very obvious in unilateral cases. Most patients have no obvious discomfort.

Differential Diagnosis

Differential diagnosis of masticatory muscle hypertrophy:

Jaw protrusion deformity: Biprotrusive jaw deformity, also known as bimaxillary protrusion, is a pointed (bird) mouth deformity characterized by open lips and exposed teeth, inability to close the mouth naturally, protruding upper and lower front teeth, and may have bony or non-bony protrusion. Regardless of how the teeth protrude, the jaw relationship is often good. Due to the protrusion of the teeth, the function of the lips is weakened over a long period of time, and the mouth cannot be closed. The protruding teeth are exposed, but the lip red appears thicker and turned outward.

Mitigation methods

First, apply a hot towel to the chewing muscles for 5 minutes to relax the muscles. Place the joints of your index and middle fingers on the chewing muscles and massage forward in circles. Your face will feel sore, and it will be effective as long as you persist. Botulinum toxin injections are often used clinically to treat enlarged masseter muscles. This method mainly uses neurotrophic effects to atrophy and shrink the masseter muscles, thereby achieving the purpose of face slimming. However, this method is not permanent.
