Infusion is very harmful

Infusion is very harmful

Throughout the year, with the change of seasons, the temperature will also fluctuate greatly. Many people will catch a cold during such seasonal changes. In general, the recovery time after a cold is about 7 days, which means that the patient will naturally recover in about 7 days after suffering from a cold. However, since everyone's physical constitution is different, some patients will take some treatments, among which infusion is not the best treatment method and may bring some hidden dangers to the patient's health.

Five major hazards of infusion

1. Fever reaction

The introduction of pyrogenic substances, incomplete cleaning and sterilization of infusion bottles, or contamination can cause the patient to feel chills, shiver, and fever. In severe cases, the fever can reach 40 to 41 degrees Celsius.

2. Pulmonary edema

Because the infusion speed is too fast and too much fluid is infused in a short period of time, the circulating blood volume increases sharply, the heart is overloaded and causes edema, which can be life-threatening in severe cases. For patients with heart failure or a history of heart disease, rapid and large-volume infusion may aggravate heart failure and, in severe cases, induce pulmonary edema.

3. Phlebitis

Long-term infusion of highly concentrated and irritating drugs, or placement of highly irritating plastic tubes in veins for too long, can cause chemical inflammatory reactions in the local venous wall. Local venous infection can also occur due to lax aseptic operation during the infusion process.

4. Air embolism

The reason is that the air was not completely exhausted during the infusion and the rubber tube was not connected tightly and had leaks. As long as a small amount of air enters the vein, the patient will feel abnormal discomfort in the chest, followed by difficulty breathing, severe cyanosis and hypoxia, and may even lead to sudden death.

5. Nosocomial infection

Among several ways of drug administration, intravenous drip is the most dangerous. Intravenous drips penetrate the skin barrier and directly inject the medicine into the blood, which requires strict aseptic processing. If the drug solution is contaminated during the production or storage process, or disposable needles are not used, or the skin at the puncture site is not disinfected properly, viruses and bacteria may enter the body, causing local inflammation at the mildest, and pathogens may spread throughout the body through the blood, causing sepsis, which can be life-threatening. If the medical environment cannot be completely sterile, cross infection will occur.

Why does intravenous infusion make people feel that the disease is cured quickly?

In this regard, experts said: It is undeniable that the method of intravenous infusion reduces the damage of drugs due to gastric acid, and the effect is more direct, especially for patients with gastrointestinal symptoms and high fever. In addition, most of the ingredients injected into the vein are normal saline, which can replenish a large amount of water through infusion. Therefore, people will feel "comfortable" after each infusion. However, for ordinary people, it is not advisable to ask for infusion at every turn.

On the other hand, infusion is the direct administration of drugs into blood vessels, so the sterility requirements are very high. If the operation is improper, the bacteria will directly enter the blood and may cause sepsis, which will be fatal. In addition, intravenous infusion has very high requirements for drug purity. If there are impurities in the drugs, the consequences are unimaginable.
