What does open wound mean?

An open wound is a wound that bleeds outward, which is the opposite of a closed injury. It is common in abrasions, lacerations, knife cuts, etc. In clinical practice, bandage roll bandaging and pressure bandaging are often used to treat this type of wound. The bandaging effect is very good. It should be noted that the wound must be cleaned before bandaging to allow all harmful substances inside to be discharged. Physiological saline or iodine tincture are good choices.

2. Open wound dressing method

1. Bandage roll dressing method: including circular bandage, spiral bandage, spiral folding bandage, "8" shaped bandage and cap-type bandage, etc. When bandaging, you must master the "three points and one movement", that is, the starting point, end point, force point and movement direction of the bandage. The bandage should start from the distal end, first bandage in a circular manner for two weeks to fix, and then bandage towards the proximal end. Expose the fingertips as much as possible to facilitate observation of blood circulation in the extremities. When bandaging, apply force evenly and keep the tightness moderate. The folded part should not press on the wound or bony protrusion.

2. Pressure bandage method. Pressure bandage is the most commonly used first aid method to stop bleeding. Cover the wound with a dressing and apply pressure with a bandage.

Principles of open wound treatment

1. Abrasions

Abrasions are caused by external friction on the skin, which can cause the skin to be scratched and bleed or have tissue fluid exudate. For shallow, small abrasions, wash the wound with normal saline or cold boiled water, disinfect the surrounding area with 70% alcohol cotton balls, apply gentian violet on the wound, and wait for it to dry. No bandage is needed, but it is best not to apply gentian violet to facial abrasions. Exposure therapy should not be used for abrasions near joints to avoid dry skin and affect joint movement.

If there are foreign objects such as coal slag, fine sand, etc. in the wound, rinse it with saline or cold boiled water. Otherwise, after the wound heals, black foreign matter will remain in the skin. The wound can be disinfected with hydrogen peroxide and the skin around the wound with alcohol cotton balls, then covered with Vaseline gauze or sprinkled with anti-inflammatory powder, and then covered and bandaged with a sterile dressing.

2. Laceration

Skin lacerations often occur on the head, especially on the forehead and face. For example, when playing basketball, the eyebrow arch may be hit by someone's elbow, causing a tear in the skin between the eyebrows. If the tear is small, it can be glued with adhesive after hemostasis and disinfection; if the wound is large, it needs to be sutured and antibiotics should be used if necessary.

3. Stab and cut wounds

Stab wounds and cuts, common in knife wounds, are treated in much the same way as lacerations. Anyone who is injured by unclean objects and the wound is small but deep should be injected with tetanus antitoxin.
