Urine routine ketones

Urine routine ketones

When it comes to ketone bodies in routine urine tests, referred to as urine ketones, I believe that not everyone is very familiar with it. In fact, there are many types of urinary pain, and they are all intermediate products of fat metabolism in our body. In addition, under normal circumstances, the urine ketone value is not easy to detect, but once we are hungry or even diabetic acidosis, urine ketones will be produced. So what happens when urine test results are positive for ketone bodies?

In fact, under normal circumstances, the production of ketone bodies in routine urine is relatively small, so normal people usually show negative results. However, once our body becomes malnourished or even suffers from chronic diseases, urine ketones will increase and appear positive in the test. So what happens when urine test results are positive for ketone bodies?

Urine ketones

Ketone bodies in urine are a general term for three different components, namely acetone, acetoacetate and β-hydroxybutyrate, which are intermediate products of fat metabolism in the body.

Under normal circumstances, it is produced in very small amounts and cannot be detected using our current conventional methods. Therefore, the qualitative test results for normal people are negative. However, in the event of hunger, impaired glucose metabolism caused by various reasons, increased lipolysis, and diabetic acidosis, ketonemia and ketonuria may occur because the rate of ketone body production is greater than the rate of tissue utilization.

Normal value: negative.

Clinical significance:

Qualitative test of urine ketone bodies is often related to diabetes, pregnancy, malnutrition and chronic diseases.

Ketone body positive may be the following:

1. In diabetic patients or patients with diabetic acidosis, a strong positive result (+++ or above) will appear. At this time, attention should be paid as toxic coma may occur easily and treatment measures should be taken in time.

2. After severe vomiting, diarrhea, long-term malnutrition, hunger, and strenuous exercise.

3. Pregnant women suffer from severe vomiting, eclampsia, digestive and absorption disorders, etc. due to pregnancy reactions.

Everyone already knows about ketone bodies in routine urine tests. In fact, when urine ketones are positive, the harm to our body cannot be ignored. Not only is it easy to cause coma due to poisoning, it can also lead to severe vomiting and even diarrhea. Therefore, when urine ketones are high, various treatment measures should be taken in a timely manner.
