What are the commonly used analgesic drugs for nasopharyngeal carcinoma

When NPC patients suffer from pain, commonly used analgesics include opioids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and antidepressants. Choosing the right analgesic strategy can not only effectively relieve pain, but also improve the quality of life.

1). Opioids: These are commonly used drugs for severe pain in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Common ones include morphine, fentanyl and codeine. Morphine can be taken orally or injected, and is suitable for relieving moderate to severe pain. Fentanyl is used for persistent severe pain and has a good analgesic effect. It can be administered through skin patches, oral sprays or injections. Codeine is mostly used for moderate pain and is often used as a second-line drug.

2). Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): For mild to moderate pain, commonly used NSAIDs include ibuprofen, naproxen, and acetaminophen. These drugs can reduce inflammation and relieve pain, and are effective for many patients, but it should be noted that long-term use may cause gastrointestinal discomfort or ulcers.

3) Antidepressants: Some chronic pain is related to the central nervous system, and antidepressants such as amitriptyline and duloxetine are sometimes used to enhance the analgesic effect. These drugs mainly achieve the purpose of analgesia by regulating neurotransmitters.

Relieving the pain of nasopharyngeal carcinoma does not only rely on drugs, but also a comprehensive treatment strategy that includes physical therapy and psychological support. Regular review and communication with doctors are important parts of ensuring effective treatment and adjusting the plan. When choosing drugs, it is necessary to balance efficacy and side effects, and if necessary, adjustments can be made under professional guidance.
