The head and thorax of the river crab are combined to form the cephalothorax, which is square and hard in texture. There is a pair of eyes at the front of the body and two pairs of very sharp crab teeth on the sides. The pair of appendages at the front end of the crab are called chelipeds, which are covered with fluff; behind the chelipeds are four pairs of walking legs, which are laterally flattened and long; the abdominal limbs have degenerated.

River crabs often burrow in the muddy banks of rivers, lakes and swamps. They are active at night and feed on fish, shrimp, animal carcasses and grains. Every autumn they migrate to river estuaries to lay eggs, which hatch in March to May of the following year. After developing into young crabs, they swim upstream in rivers and continue to develop and grow in fresh water. The meat of river crabs is tender and fresh, and is a food that is deeply loved by people.
