Constipation is a common symptom of the human digestive system. It is not ruled out that it is caused by organic lesions in the intestines. However, most simple or functional constipation is caused by rectal constipation due to abnormal defecation reflex. Normally, if food residues are not excreted from the body within forty hours, constipation occurs. After constipation, people tend to fart and pass smelly gas without defecating, and are often accompanied by a general feeling of irritability and restlessness.

1. Clinical manifestations of constipation

The clinical manifestations are decreased frequency of bowel movements, dry stools or constipation, and no normal feeling of comfort after bowel movements. Some patients may experience dizziness, loss of appetite, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, bitter taste in the mouth, excessive flatulence from the anus, constant smelly farts, accompanied by general discomfort and irritability.

2. Causes and hazards of constipation

There are many causes of this disease, most of which are caused by accumulation of heat evil, old age and physical weakness, pregnancy, etc. Constipation can cause diseases such as premature aging, colon cancer and certain mental disorders. Constipation in the elderly can also induce and aggravate angina pectoris, cerebral hemorrhage, hemorrhoids, anal fissures and other symptoms.

3. Family measures to prevent and treat constipation

1. Do more exercise

People who can move should try to do some exercise, such as walking and practicing Tai Chi. You can also do abdominal muscle contraction exercises as early as possible. The specific method is: take a deep breath, relax the abdominal muscles at the same time to make the abdomen bulge, and when exhaling, contract the abdominal muscles to make the abdomen concave.

2. Eat more whole grains

As we all know, dietary fiber has the function of absorbing water and softening stool, and it is also the main component of feces. It can stimulate intestinal muscle peristalsis and push feces down quickly. These dietary fibers are mainly found in coarse grains.

4. Laxative Medicinal Diet

1. Mushroom and peach kernel soup: 500 grams of mushrooms, 200 grams of fresh peach kernels, 550 milliliters of chicken soup, appropriate amounts of salt, cooking wine, wet starch and white sugar. Steam the fresh peach kernels and set aside. Add salt, cooking wine and sugar to the chicken soup, bring it to a boil, then add cooked peach kernels and soaked mushrooms and cook together. Thicken with wet starch and it is served with meals. It has the effect of moisturizing the intestines and promoting bowel movements and is suitable for constipation.

2. Five-kernel porridge: 10 grams each of sesame seeds, pine nuts, walnut kernels, peach kernels (peeled and fried), and sweet almonds, 200 grams of polished rice, and appropriate amount of white sugar. Mix the 5 kernels and grind them, then add them into polished rice and cook into porridge. When eating, add white sugar and take it every morning and evening. It has the effect of nourishing the liver and kidneys, moisturizing the intestines. It is suitable for habitual constipation caused by deficiency of Qi and blood in middle-aged and elderly people.

5. Special treatments for constipation

1. Massage laxative method

Lie on your back in bed, use your right palm to push upward from the right lower abdomen to the right upper abdomen, then push to the left to the left upper abdomen, and then push downward to the left lower abdomen. Repeat pushing and pressing around the navel for 40 to 50 circles, and finally press the navel a few times. Do this once in the morning and once in the evening every day, and keep doing it.

2. Soap bar laxative method

Cut ordinary soap into the same shape as the radish strips mentioned above, dip it in a small amount of water, and slowly insert it into the anus, which will automatically lead to bowel movements. Inserting a suppository or glycerin suppository into the anus can also lead to bowel movements.
