How to clean baby's earwax

Although you should try not to pick your baby's ears when he is young, you can clean it if you find that your baby has too much earwax, because too much earwax may cause hearing loss or other ear diseases. So how should parents clean their baby's earwax? If parents do not have the confidence to clean their baby's earwax themselves, they can go to a pediatric hospital to clean their baby's ears.

1. What are the dangers of having too much earwax in babies?

1. If the baby has too much earwax, it will cause blockage of the external auditory canal and easily form "cerumen embolism". If the embolism is not removed in time, it will become larger and larger, compressing the skin of the external auditory canal, which may induce skin erosion, swelling and granulation formation in the external auditory canal.

2. Excessive earwax may cause inflammation of the baby's external auditory canal and cause pain. If too much earwax sticks close to the eardrum, it may cause tinnitus, dizziness, reflex cough, headache, etc. In severe cases, it may also cause eardrum perforation, otitis media, etc.

3. Long-term earwax blockage and ear canal infection can cause damage to the baby's external auditory canal skin and even cause external auditory canal lipoma.

2. Is it harmful to frequently pick earwax for babies?

1. The external auditory canal of infants and young children is immature and mostly flat and slit-shaped. The skin inside the ear is also very delicate. Frequent ear cleaning of babies may injure the skin inside the ear and cause ear canal inflammation. In severe cases, it may even puncture the baby's eardrum and cause hearing damage.

2. Frequent digging of the baby's ears may cause chronic congestion of the skin of the external auditory canal, more vigorous secretion of the cerumen glands, and increased earwax, which will block the external auditory canal.

3. Frequently picking out baby's earwax can easily lead to adverse consequences. Frequent irritation of the ear canal may lead to the formation of external auditory canal papilloma, which may even turn into cancer if it recurs.

3. How to deal with baby's earwax

1. The earwax that usually accumulates in the baby's external auditory canal will generally be discharged by itself through jaw movements such as chewing and opening the mouth.

2. If your baby has earwax, you can use a cotton swab dipped in water to gently wipe the external auditory canal and remove it after the earwax is moistened.

3. Let the baby lie on his side and drop 1 to 2 drops of ear drops into the ear. After the drops are instilled, let the baby remain lying on his side for 2 minutes to allow the earwax to be fully diluted and then removed.

4. Use a sterilized cotton ball to make an earplug and put one in the baby's ear. Take out the earplug the next day and remove the earwax stuck on it.

5. If the baby's earwax secretion is excessive and condenses into hard lumps causing obstruction of the external auditory canal, it is recommended to take the baby to the ENT department of the hospital to seek help from a doctor. Do not force the baby to deal with it at home.

4. Precautions for cleaning baby's earwax

1. Do not use hairpins, matchsticks, ear picks or other tools to clean your baby's earwax, and educate your baby not to clean his ears by himself.

2. When cleaning earwax for your baby, if the baby does not cooperate, struggles, or stimulates the external auditory canal to trigger a coughing reflex, it may hurt the baby's eardrum, so don't clean earwax for your baby casually.

3. Infants and young children need to go to the hospital regularly to have their earwax cleaned every 3 to 6 months. If earwax becomes hard and causes pain due to water in the ear or other reasons, you need to see an ENT doctor for help.

4. Pay attention to keep the baby's external auditory canal dry to avoid earwax blockage. If there is external auditory canal inflammation, seek medical treatment in time.

5. When cleaning earwax for your baby, do not exceed 1/3 of the external auditory canal. Try to move slowly and gently, and prevent water from entering the ears within two or three days after cleaning the ears.
