What diseases should you be alert to if you suddenly gain weight

For the human body, any sudden changes require our vigilance. For example, sudden weight gain may be caused by diseases such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome or diabetes. If the patient ignores the symptoms of sudden weight gain and fails to identify the problems in his body in time, it will cause greater harm to the patient's health after the condition worsens!

1. Beware of hypothyroidism

The first thing to be alert to when you gain weight is hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is caused by an underactive thyroid gland and insufficient thyroid hormone. People who have a thyroid gland or have had thyroid surgery or received radiation therapy may develop this sequelae. If the thyroid hormone is insufficient, the body's metabolic function will be hindered, and the body will easily feel tired. At the same time, symptoms such as constipation, irregular menstruation, and dry skin may also occur. In addition, your appetite and basal metabolic rate will decrease, so you will gain weight even if you eat very little. Because the body consumes less basic calories.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism are subtle and difficult to detect. Taking thyroid hormones can alleviate this symptom. Patients are advised not to smoke or drink to avoid burdening the thyroid gland.

2. Beware of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

If a woman suddenly gains weight, she may be suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome. Polycystic ovary syndrome is relatively common, with 10% of women suffering from the disease, and young women of childbearing age are more likely to suffer from the disease. If you suffer from PCOS, you will experience irregular menstruation, increased body hair, and will easily gain weight.

3. Beware of diabetes

Changes in weight are a "window" into abnormal changes in insulin and blood sugar. A large number of studies at home and abroad have shown that about 60%-80% of adult diabetic patients are overweight before the onset of the disease, and the degree of obesity is positively correlated with the incidence of diabetes. The main culprit for the high incidence of diabetes in obese people is excessive fat, especially abdominal fat.

Although insulin is the only hormone that can lower blood sugar, its role is more than that. Insulin is also involved in the metabolism of fat and protein in the body. If there is excess body fat, the burden on insulin will increase. Once the insulin-secreting organs are overworked, the amount and function of insulin will be affected, and blood sugar will not be lowered in time.

Previous follow-up studies on type 2 diabetes have found that the process of transformation from a normal state to diabetes is always accompanied by changes in body weight. As weight increases, insulin sensitivity gradually decreases, insulin secretion decreases, blood sugar gradually increases, and when it reaches a certain level, glycosuria will appear. As the amount of sugar in urine continues to increase, “three mores and one less” will appear. Therefore, weight gain is an early change in diabetes.
