What causes dark nails

What causes dark nails

Nails can determine a person's physical health. At the same time, people must also have nutritional supplements. Many people's nails are dark and dull due to the lack of certain vitamins and trace elements, which leads to such changes. In addition, everyone needs to pay attention to any disease or inflammation, which may lead to unhealthy nails. We must carefully observe the symptoms of the body and pay attention to them.

How to measure your health with your fingernails

1. Clubbing: The nail is significantly arched upward and curved around the finger. Nail clubbing may indicate emphysema, tuberculosis, cardiovascular disease, ulcerative colitis, or cirrhosis of the liver.

2. Blue Crescent: If the crescent-shaped white mark at the base of the nail has a blue halo, it may indicate any of the following conditions: obstructed blood circulation, heart disease, Raynaud's syndrome, vasospasm of the fingers and toes, usually due to cold exposure. But it is sometimes associated with rheumatoid arthritis or the autoimmune disease lupus erythematosus.

3. Spoon-shaped nail: The middle of the nail is sunken, and the entire nail becomes flat or spoon-shaped. This type of nails is related to iron deficiency anemia, syphilis, thyroid disorders, rheumatic fever, etc.

4. Lindsay's nails: The half of the nail near the tip is pink or brown, and the half near the nail is white. This type of nail is also called bipartite nail and may be a sign of chronic renal failure.

5. Beau's lines: Horizontal grooves on the nails indicate malnutrition or a serious illness that temporarily affects nail growth, such as measles, rib inflammation, or a sudden heart attack.

6. Thali's nails: Most of the skin under the nail turns white, leaving only a small area near the tip of the nail that remains normal pink. This may indicate cirrhosis of the liver.

7. Yellow nail syndrome: nail growth slows down and becomes thick and hard; it is yellow or green. Causes include chronic respiratory diseases, thyroid disease or lymphatic disease.

8. Bleeding: If these vertical red lines appear on the nails, it means microvascular bleeding. If multiple such blood lines appear, it may indicate chronic hypertension, psoriasis or a fatal infection called subacute bacterial endocarditis.

9. Irregular pits: Many psoriasis patients have this phenomenon.

10. Rows of pits: The surface of the nails becomes like the surface of copperware hammered by a coppersmith, sometimes caused by alopecia areata. This is an immune disease that is not well understood by the medical community and can cause partial or complete loss of hair.

11. Brown or black spots: These spots, especially those that extend from the nail into the surrounding finger tissue, may indicate melanoma. They may be a single large patch or a cluster of smaller spots, and are most common on the thumb and big toe.

There are usually two situations when there are vertical lines on the nails:

The nail plate is thin and brittle, with longitudinal ridge-like protrusions, and the distal end is often ruptured and separated due to malnutrition. It can also be seen in patients with diseases such as lichen planus and alopecia areata.

The typical longitudinal groove of the nail is a longitudinal ridge in the center of the nail plate, with the top of the ridge sunken to form a shallow groove. It may also be without a ridge but with obvious grooves. It is often caused by damage to the nail matrix and can also be seen in patients with diseases such as lichen planus. It is a manifestation of allergic reaction.

In order to detect your disease in time, please always pay attention to your hands, it may be giving you a warning
