It is currently believed that gastric mucosal intestinal metaplasia (especially large intestinal type) is a precancerous lesion second only to gastric mucosal dysplasia.

Intestinal metaplasia of gastric mucosa is a common lesion of gastric mucosa, especially in chronic atrophic gastritis and gastric ulcer.
