Spinal cord injury classification method

Spinal cord injury classification method

The levels of spinal cord injury are divided into five types according to the degree of spinal cord injury. The first type is type A, which is a complete spinal cord injury. This symptom will cause the patient to have no feeling of movement of the nerves at all, which is a more serious symptom. Then there are four types of injuries: B, C, D, and E. Each registered injury is relatively mild and can be alleviated by taking good care of the spinal cord.

ASIA, the full name of which is American Spinal Injury Association. ASIA, International Standard Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury, is an assessment of the neurological level of patients with spinal cord injury. The assessment is divided into two major parts: sensory and motor. The left and right sides are evaluated separately, and the neural plane is defined as the lowest plane in the motor/sensory plane. For example, if the motor cervical 5 and the sensory cervical 6, then the neural plane cervical 5.

AIS A-complete injury, no sensation or movement in the sacral region (S4-5);

AIS B-(Sensory) Incomplete injury with sensation but no motor activity below the neurological level and including the sacrum (S4-5).

AIS C-Incomplete injury, motor function below the neurological level, and strength of more than half of the key muscles below the neurological level is less than grade 3.

AIS D - Incomplete injury with motor function below the neurological level and strength of at least half of the key muscles below the neurological level greater than or equal to grade 3.

AIS E - Normal. All sensations and movements are normal.

(Usually appears in follow-up examinations. If the spinal cord injury is initially assessed as grade E, then it is not suitable for AIS assessment.)
