Is copper sulfate pentahydrate a pure substance?

Is copper sulfate pentahydrate a pure substance?

Copper sulfate pentahydrate is a chemical substance, also known as copper sulfate crystals. It is relatively common in daily life. It is also called blue vitriol or gall vitriol. It has a great emetic effect and can effectively detoxify. It is a pure substance and can easily turn into water under high temperature conditions. It usually appears as powder or crystals.

Is copper sulfate pentahydrate a pure substance?

Copper sulfate pentahydrate, also known as copper sulfate crystals, is a pure substance.

Characteristics

Copper sulfate is a natural hydrated copper sulfate, the common name for copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO?·5H?O). In order to distinguish it from "anhydrous copper sulfate", it is usually read as "copper sulfate pentahydrate". It has a relative molecular mass of 250 and is a widely distributed sulfate mineral. It is a secondary mineral formed when copper sulfide is decomposed by oxygen.

Copper sulfate is produced in the oxidation zone of copper deposits and often appears on the inner walls and pillars of mine tunnels. It is formed by crystallization of water in the mine.

The crystals of gallstones are plate-like or short columnar. When these crystals are gathered together, they appear granular, blocky, fibrous, stalactite-like, crusty, etc. They have a beautiful blue color, but will turn into an opaque greenish-white powder if exposed to dry air due to loss of water. At the same time, gallstones are highly soluble in water.

Gallite is a chemical raw material for pigments, batteries, pesticides, wood preservatives, etc.

Source: Natural or artificially produced hydrous copper sulfate crystals. The shape is irregular block crystals of varying sizes, dark blue or light blue, and translucent. Expose to dry air and weather slowly. When heated, it loses its crystal water and turns white, and turns blue when it comes into contact with water. It is brittle, easy to break and soluble in water. Odorless, bitter and astringent taste. Nature and flavor are sour, pungent and cold. poisonous. Functions and indications: dispelling wind and phlegm, eliminating stagnation, drying dampness and killing insects. Used for wind-heat phlegm congestion, epilepsy; used externally to treat mouth ulcers, red and sore eyes, and swelling and pus of sores. Dosage: 1 to 2 fen, mostly in pills or powders. For external use, grind into powder and apply or soak in hot water to wash the affected area. nature

Copper sulfate pentahydrate is very stable at room temperature and pressure, does not deliquesce, and will gradually weather in dry air. When heated to 45°C, it loses two molecules of crystalline water, and when heated to 110°C, it loses four molecules of crystalline water, which is called copper sulfate monohydrate. When heated to 200°C, it loses all crystalline water and becomes anhydrous. It can also lose five crystal waters under the action of concentrated sulfuric acid. The anhydrous form can also easily absorb water and transform into hydrated copper sulfate. After absorbing water, it reacts to generate copper sulfate pentahydrate (blue). This property is often used to test whether certain liquid organic substances contain trace amounts of water (for example, to identify whether alcohol contains water, add a small amount of anhydrous copper sulfate to the alcohol to be identified. If the white anhydrous copper sulfate turns blue, it means that water is mixed in the alcohol). Be careful to distinguish between the two.

Heating anhydrous copper sulfate to 650°C can decompose it into black copper oxide, sulfur dioxide and oxygen (or sulfur trioxide).

Copper sulfate is a natural hydrated copper sulfate and a widely distributed sulfate mineral. It is a secondary mineral formed when copper sulfide is decomposed by oxygen.

Anhydrous copper sulfate can be used to test whether water exists in other substances.
