Causes of right eyelid spasm

Causes of right eyelid spasm

In daily life, eyelid spasm refers to our eyelids twitching. As the saying goes, when the eyelids twitch, good fortune comes. Eyes are very important to us. Our eyes are active all the time. Eyelids have a good protective effect on the eyes. In our lives, eyelid twitching often occurs for no reason. In fact, eye spasm is a very common disease. What exactly is going on with my eye spasm?

Blepharospasm is an unexplained, involuntary spasm and twitching of the muscles in the facial nerve innervation area. It is more common in middle-aged and elderly people. It is a neurological disease that brings great mental and physical pain to patients and also greatly affects their appearance. It does not have the clonic twitching of the lower facial muscles. The duration of the spasm can be long or short, and the spasm is manifested by repeated involuntary and strong eye closure. Many patients with blepharospasm have endured pain for a considerable period of time before receiving a clear diagnosis and treatment, and timely treatment is often delayed due to misdiagnosis.

Hemifacial spasm, also known as facial muscle twitching or hemifacial spasm, is a functional disorder syndrome caused by irritation of one facial nerve. Most cases are on one side, and bilateral cases are rare, accounting for about 4%. Most patients are adults over 40 years old, with a male to female ratio of 2:3. Clinical manifestations: It starts with twitching of one eyelid, which gradually spreads from top to bottom to the half facial muscles. Only in severe cases can it affect the neck and shoulder muscles. This involuntary spasm cannot be controlled by the person himself. Emotional tension and excessive fatigue can induce or aggravate the condition. According to tests, this type of synchronous discharge of facial muscles is 350 times per second, manifested by tightly closed eyelids and crooked corners of the mouth. One twitch lasts for several seconds or even several minutes, with intervals of varying lengths. During an attack, the patient becomes upset and has blurred vision, and occasionally suffers from facial soreness, nasal congestion, and headache.

The normal blinking process is the result of the coordinated action of the eyelid closing muscles (orbicularis oculi, corrugator supercilii and depressor supercilii) and the eyelid opening muscles (levator palpebrae superioris and frontalis). Blepharospasm is caused by the dysfunction of the coordinated function of closing and opening the eyelid. In the past, many doctors believed that blepharospasm could be caused by psychological factors. Through observation, they found that long-term mental stress can trigger and aggravate blepharospasm and be accompanied by the occurrence of mental illness.

Modern medicine believes that blepharospasm is a functional disease of the nervous system and may be caused by multiple factors. However, its exact pathogenesis remains unclear.
