What are the small particles on the lips

Many people will experience symptoms of small particles growing on their lips due to physical reasons, which seriously affects the patients' daily lives. The appearance of particles on the lips may be due to different types of diseases such as sebaceous gland dysplasia, leukoplakia, oral ulcers, hand, foot and mouth disease, or herpes. So, what are the specific symptoms of these diseases that can cause small particles to grow on the lips? Below, we will introduce the relevant knowledge in detail!

1. Sebaceous gland ectopic disease

The white spots and granules on the lips are most likely due to sebaceous gland ectopia, which is a proliferative lesion occurring in the lips, oral mucosa and external genitalia due to physiological variations of the sebaceous glands.

Symptoms: In addition to the symptoms of small white spots on the lips, papules will also appear in some private parts. They appear as needle-sized, isolated, yellow-white bumps that are higher than the skin surface. They are scattered or clustered, and generally have no subjective symptoms.

2. Leukoplakia

The white spots and granules on the lips are likely to be leukoplakia, which are white patches occurring on the mucosa, but as a disease, it mainly refers to those leukoplakia characterized by hyperkeratosis and epithelial hyperplasia.

Symptoms: This disease often occurs on the lower lip, gums, cheeks and tongue mucosa of the mouth, the vulva or vagina of women, and occasionally on the glans penis or both sides of the foreskin of men. In the early stage, it appears as small pale white dots or thin strips, without any subjective symptoms. After a few months, flat, raised, milky-skin-like patches of varying sizes appear on the mucosa, or merge into large patches. The surface is often shiny, and then gradually thickens and hardens, tightly adhering to the mucosa. Forceful scraping will cause bleeding. At this time, there will be itching and tenderness. After scratching, the affected area will become congested, swollen, and red. Minor trauma will cause bleeding. In severe cases, the affected area will have cracks or ulcers.

3. Oral ulcers

Mouth ulcers may also cause white spots on the lips. This is a relatively common disease, and oral ulcers are also the main area of the disease.

Symptoms: In addition to the white particles growing on the lips, there may also be symptoms such as headache, fever, local lymph node swelling and pain, and ulcers in the mouth.

4. Hand, foot and mouth disease

If white spots and particles grow on the lips of a child, the first thing to consider is hand, foot and mouth disease, which is an infectious disease that mostly occurs in children under five years old.

Symptoms: Children with hand, foot and mouth disease will not only have small white spots on their lips, but will also develop maculopapular rashes on their hands, feet, buttocks, arms, and legs, which will later turn into herpes. At the same time, some children may also experience discomfort symptoms such as cough, runny nose, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and headache.

5. Herpes

Herpes can also cause white spots on the lips. Herpes is mainly caused by viruses. There are currently 8 known viruses, namely herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, varicella-zoster virus, human cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus and human herpes virus types 6, 7 and 8, collectively referred to as human herpesvirus (HHV).

Symptoms: In addition to white particles on the lips, herpes may also cause clusters of small blisters to appear in other places. Herpes caused by different herpes viruses will cause the blisters to appear in different locations, and the symptoms and duration of the blisters will also vary. It is best to seek medical treatment in a timely manner.
