What causes nasal polyps

What causes nasal polyps

Nasal polyps are a very common disease in daily life. They are caused by long-term inflammatory response of the nasal mucosa leading to tissue edema. Immune deficiency, genetic factors, environmental factors, ciliary dysfunction, endocrine disorders, etc. can all lead to the occurrence of nasal polyps. Therefore, people need to have a full understanding of this and do preventive work as early as possible to avoid disease infection and maintain a healthy body.

1. Nasal polyps

Nasal polyps are a common nasal disease and are also associated with certain systemic diseases. It is the result of long-term inflammatory response of the nasal mucosa causing tissue edema. Nasal polyps mostly originate from the middle nasal meatus sinus opening, nasal meatus complex and ethmoid sinus. The highly edematous nasal mucosa bulges and droops from the middle nasal meatus and sinus opening into the nasal cavity to form polyps.

2. Causes of nasal polyps

There are many causes of nasal polyps, such as genetic factors, immune deficiency, ciliary dysfunction, etc., which can all lead to the occurrence of this disease. It is now generally believed that chronic upper respiratory tract infection and allergic reaction are the main causes of nasal polyps.

3. What are the harms of nasal polyps to the body?

1. If nasal polyps that cause secretory otitis media are not treated in time or are treated improperly, the size of the polyps will increase. The increase in the size of polyps will also cause blockage of the pharyngeal opening of the Eustachian tube, causing serious negative impact on the function of the Eustachian tube, thereby leading to the occurrence of secretory otitis media.

2. Affects the patient's quality of life. Nasal congestion caused by nasal polyps can easily make patients experience breathing difficulties, resulting in symptoms such as dizziness, headache, inability to concentrate, memory loss, and lack of energy, which have a great impact on the patient's quality of life.

3. Nasal congestion is a common symptom of nasal polyps that causes cardiovascular disease, and poor nasal ventilation will cause patients to snore while sleeping. Long-term snoring not only reduces the blood oxygen concentration in the patient's body, affecting the function and metabolism of tissues and organs, but is also related to the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases and certain respiratory diseases.

Clinical manifestations of nasal polyps

Nasal polyps are more common on both sides and less common on one side. A common symptom is persistent nasal congestion, which worsens as the polyp grows. The nasal secretions increase, sometimes accompanied by sneezing. The secretions may be serous or mucous. If there is a concurrent sinus infection, the secretions may be purulent. Many people have olfactory impairment. People with severe nasal congestion speak with a nasal voice and snore during sleep. People with long polyp pedicles may feel something moving in their nasal cavity with breathing. Posterior nasal polyps can make it difficult to breathe through the nose. If the polyps block the opening of the Eustachian tube, it can cause tinnitus and hearing loss. Polyps block sinus drainage and can cause sinusitis, causing patients to experience pain and discomfort in the nasal dorsum, forehead, and cheeks.
