How to identify ripe jackfruit

How to identify ripe jackfruit

For inexperienced people, when buying jackfruits, they don’t know which ones are ripe and which ones are unripe? It is actually quite simple to judge whether the jackfruit is ripe. First, look at the appearance. When tapping the jackfruit, if the sound is turbid, it means that the jackfruit is ripe. In addition, when the jackfruit is ripe, it will be full of fragrance, which is also a better way to judge.

How to identify the ripeness of jackfruit

1. Appearance judgment

First of all, the shell of the jackfruit should be complete and look relatively fresh, without any cracks. The fruit should be large in size, and the raised tumors on the shell should be relatively brittle and hard when rubbed, and can be easily broken. There should be no white juice, and the sound of tapping the jackfruit should be turbid, which means it is ripe. Unripe jackfruits usually have a green skin, which will turn yellow when ripe. When pressed, it can feel soft and elastic, and you can then judge whether it is ripe by smelling it.

2. Smell and taste

When the jackfruit is ripe, its fragrance cannot be covered, and the whole house may be filled with its fragrance. In order to prevent the jackfruit from being too ripe, the jackfruit is basically ripe when it starts to emit fragrance. When you judge the ripeness of the jackfruit by its appearance, smell it with your nose. If there is a strong fragrance, you can cut it open to check. If the jackfruit is ripe, you can smell its fragrance even from a distance.

3. Cut and check

If the jackfruit is not ripe, it will be difficult to ripen it after it is cut. Not only will it rot easily, but the unripe flesh will have no taste and may even be astringent, which is very unpalatable. Therefore, it is best to be patient and determine whether the jackfruit is ripe before cutting it. If the fruit is golden yellow, you can eat it. If it is not golden yellow, it needs to be ripened.

4. Ripening method

If the above conditions are not met, that is to say, the jackfruit is not yet ripe or fully ripe, you can put it in the sun for a day. If the sun is very strong, just a few hours will be enough. If there is no good weather, you can use a heater to keep the temperature constant for a few hours. Whether it is drying in the sun or blowing with hot air, you need to turn it over from time to time, then wrap it with newspaper, towel or thin quilt, and put it in a cool and dry place. Check it after two days. When it meets the maturity conditions, you can cut it. Normally, the whole jackfruit can be kept for a week without any problem. If you don’t finish eating it after cutting, you can cover it with plastic wrap and put it in a dry place and continue to eat it the next day.
