Will thyroid function affect the intelligence of the fetus

Will thyroid function affect the intelligence of the fetus

Some pregnant women will be diagnosed with thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy. This is an abnormal thyroid function and is a relatively common disease at present, but it is very difficult to detect. Therefore, every time it is discovered, the condition has become serious. In that case, you must go to the hospital for examination. Only if it is discovered in time can you take appropriate treatment. Otherwise, it may affect the fetus. However, not all such cases will affect the intellectual development of the fetus.

reason :

Abnormal thyroid function is one of the common complications during pregnancy. Hypothyroidism during pregnancy can damage the neurological and intellectual development of the fetus, and increase the risk of perinatal complications such as early miscarriage, premature birth, intrauterine growth retardation, low birth weight, gestational hypertension, and placental abruption. However, thyroid disease during pregnancy has no obvious symptoms and is not easy to detect in time, so you need to go to the hospital for regular screening, and try to start during pregnancy preparation or early pregnancy. Women with a history of recurrent miscarriage should have their thyroid function screened. Taking medication for hyperthyroidism during pregnancy will have a certain impact on the fetus, and its safety is not yet certain, so the doctor will use the appropriate amount of medication based on the patient's thyroid function indicators. If the screening results confirm hyperthyroidism during pregnancy, it is recommended to take propylthiouracil. The goal of treatment is to achieve the lowest possible drug dose to maintain (free T4) in the high normal range for non-pregnant women.

In addition, it is not recommended to take hyperthyroidism drugs for thyroid dysfunction caused by transient hyperthyroidism during pregnancy or hyperemesis gravidarum.

Because thyroid hormone is needed for the development of the fetal brain. Early pregnancy (the first 12 weeks of pregnancy) is the first rapid development period of fetal brain development. At this time, the fetus's own thyroid function has not yet been established, and the thyroid hormone required for fetal brain development is completely dependent on maternal supply. If the expectant mother suffers from "hypothyroidism" at this time, that is, the maternal thyroid hormone level remains low, it will not be able to provide sufficient thyroid hormone for the fetal brain development, which will in turn affect the fetal brain development and even cause irreversible damage.

Thyroid hormones can regulate various metabolisms in the human body and maintain cell life activities. Its effect on infants is to promote their growth and development. Lack of it will lead to cretinism and mental retardation; excess will cause hyperthyroidism (commonly known as "hyperthyroidism").

Considering the overall incidence of thyroid cancer, the incidence of thyroid cancer in women is higher than that in men, which may be related to the high estrogen levels in women. Among all thyroid diseases, the male to female ratio of thyroid cancer is 1:3.
