What are the methods for correcting tooth malocclusion?

Malocclusion is a type of dental deformity. If the teeth are maloccluded, it will not only affect a person's appearance, but will also cause difficulty in chewing food, which in turn leads to difficulty in eating and prevents the body from getting adequate nutrition. Therefore, if the teeth are maloccluded, it needs to be corrected in time. So, what are the methods for correcting tooth malocclusion? The following will give you a detailed introduction!

1. Functional brackets

The main feature of functional brackets is that the corrective force for correcting teeth mainly comes from the patient's oral and maxillofacial system muscle strength, or a long-lasting and gentle corrective force. Function

2. Movable bracket

The removable bracket is composed of the retaining device's clasp, interproximal hook, base, correction spring, etc. Patients can put it on and take it off by themselves. It is now mostly used to break bad oral habits, correct some simple malocclusions or as an auxiliary device for fixed correction, and its scope of application is relatively limited. Most of the functional brackets are removable brackets, such as Twin-block, Frankel brackets, etc., but some functional brackets are fixed brackets, such as Forsus, Herbst, etc. [6] Compared with removable brackets, fixed brackets have the advantage of not relying on patient cooperation and can better guarantee the therapeutic effect to a certain extent.

3. Fixed bracket

1. Metal brackets

Metal brackets refer to orthodontic brackets that are bonded to the cheek side of the teeth through adhesives, and force is applied through the orthodontic archwire and the orthodontic brackets on the teeth to correct the teeth. Patients cannot remove this type of bracket by themselves. At present, the most widely used metal brackets in the world are straight wire brackets (Straightwire appliances). Because they are used by the most doctors and are the most widely used, they have more complete correction functions in all aspects.

2. Self-ligating brackets

Self-ligating brackets are the most advanced buccal fixed brackets currently available. Compared with traditional non-self-ligating brackets, they can significantly reduce discomfort during the orthodontic process, extend the time between follow-up visits, shorten the time of intraoral operations during visits, and are easier to clean and maintain oral hygiene. In addition, self-ligating brackets can reduce the resistance when teeth move, helping teeth to be leveled and aligned faster. The self-ligating designs of various brands on the market are different. The double-clip self-ligating brackets also have a unique automatic protection function. When the orthodontic force is too large, it can automatically release the archwire to avoid tooth damage and root apex resorption, thereby better protecting the health of teeth and periodontal tissues. Self-ligating brackets are made of two materials: metal and ceramic, both of which have the above characteristics. The color of ceramic self-ligating brackets is very close to that of teeth and is more beautiful than metal self-ligating brackets.

3. Ceramic brackets

Ceramic materials are close in color to natural teeth and are less visible when glued to teeth, allowing the correction process to be completed quietly. Therefore, it is deeply loved by adults and patients with high aesthetic requirements, and has become one of the indispensable materials for orthodontic correction. However, ceramic materials are relatively weak and can easily break during treatment or removal, thus affecting the treatment outcome. The color is easily stained and discolored due to the patient's poor oral hygiene maintenance habits, which used to be the main problem. But with the advent of a new generation of microcrystalline ceramic materials, these former defects have now been overcome. While ensuring overall strength, today's high-end ceramic bracket materials are smaller in size and stronger in strength. They also have the advantages of being difficult to stain, discolor, and easy to remove.
