What are the differences between Shanlihong and Hawthorn

What are the differences between Shanlihong and Hawthorn

In our lives, we are quite familiar with hawthorn. Of course, hawthorn is also quite common. Many people like to eat hawthorn very much. They feel that hawthorn tastes sour and sweet, and has a good appetite-stimulating effect. Some people will choose to eat some hawthorn to relieve the discomfort after eating something harmful to their diet. People who are losing weight will also use hawthorn to make tea. Everyone has heard of the name Shanlihong. In our impression, hawthorn and Shanlihong are similar.

Difference 1

The mountain red is a deciduous tree that grows on sandy hillsides and riverside forests and is often cultivated in the north. It is mainly produced in North China, Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui and other places; the fruit of Shanlihong is nearly spherical, with a diameter of 1 to 2.5 cm. The surface of Shanlihong is bright red to purple-red, shiny, covered with gray-white spots, with a persistent calyx at the top and the remnants of the fruit stalk at the base. Most of the products are round cross-sections, which are wrinkled and uneven, and about 2 to 8 mm thick. The flesh is exposed to the sun and is dark yellow to light brown. 3 to 5 light yellow pits can be seen on the cut surface, some of which have fallen off. The flesh is hard, has a slight fragrance, and tastes sour and slightly sweet.

Difference 2

Hawthorn is very similar to mountain red, except that the leaves are smaller and the pinnates are deeper; the pear fruit is smaller and grows on the edges of forests on hillsides and in riverbank thickets. It is distributed in Northeast China and Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and other places. Hawthorn fruit is spherical, 1 to 1.5 cm in diameter. The surface is dark red with small spots. The rest are the same as "Shanlihong".

Difference Three

Shanlihong and hawthorn actually belong to the same family and genus, and have similar medicinal value to hawthorn. It can also be said that they are close relatives, but they are different in shape. The fruits of Shanlihong are usually relatively large, nearly spherical, with a diameter of up to 2.5 cm, bright red or dark red, shiny, with a persistent calyx on the top, remnants of the fruit stalk at the base, grayish-white spots on the peel, whitish flesh, and a sour-sweet taste. Hawthorn fruit is small, with a diameter of 0.8-1.4cm, hard texture, fine wrinkles, brown or brown-red surface, thin flesh, and sour taste. Hawthorn is generally used for medicinal purposes, and the ones we get from the Chinese medicine store are all hawthorns; the red fruits used to make candied haws are larger in size, and most of them are mountain reds. There is also a saying that Shanlihong is a variant of Hawthorn.
