What is the overview of glioma

Numerous studies have shown that the human brain has a variety of complex functions. If the brain has pathological changes, it will inevitably affect a person's behavior, actions, etc., and all aspects of the incoordination. Glioma is a common disease occurring in the brain. Let us take a look at the overview of glioma.

Gliomas are tumors that occur in the neuroectoderm, so they are also called neuroectodermal tumors or neuroepithelial tumors. Tumors originate from neural interstitial cells, namely glia, ependyma, choroid plexus epithelium, and neural parenchymal cells, namely neurons. Most tumors originate from different types of glia, but based on their histological origins and similar biological characteristics, various tumors that occur in the neuroectoderm are generally called gliomas.

Each type of glioma has its own age of occurrence. For example, astrocytoma is more common in middle-aged people, glioblastoma multiforme is more common in middle-aged people, ependymoma is more common in children and young people, and medulloblastoma mostly occurs in children. The most common sites of each type of glioma are also different. For example, astrocytoma mostly occurs in the cerebral hemisphere of adults, while in children it mostly occurs in the cerebellum; glioblastoma multiforme almost always occurs in the cerebral hemisphere; ependymoma is more common in the fourth ventricle; the vast majority of oligodendrogliomas occur in the cerebral hemisphere, and medulloblastoma almost always occurs in the cerebellar vermis.

From the perspective of epidemiology: glioma is the most common among various intracranial tumors. Among gliomas, astrocytoma is the most common, followed by glioblastoma multiforme, and ependymoma ranks third. According to statistics from Beijing Xuanwu Hospital and Tianjin Medical College Affiliated Hospital, among 2,573 cases of glioma, males are more common, especially in glioblastoma multiforme and medulloblastoma, males are significantly more than females. Most of them are between 20 and 50 years old, with 30 to 40 years old as the highest peak. In addition, children around 10 years old are also more common, which is another small peak.

I believe everyone has a certain understanding of glioma.
