Can I get a booster shot of rabies vaccine?

Can I get a booster shot of rabies vaccine?

We must pay attention to and understand the issue of rabies vaccine, especially if you often come into contact with animals like cats and dogs, you should be more cautious, because once you are scratched or bitten, you may be at risk of contracting rabies. Therefore, you must get the vaccine in time after being bitten. The sooner the vaccine is given, the more obvious the effect will be. For healthy people who have not been bitten, the injection of rabies vaccine is actually a preventive measure.

1. Prevention after bite.

For general bites, i.e. mild abrasions, scratches or licks on broken skin without bleeding, one ampoule of the vaccine should be injected on days 0 (day 1, the day of injection), 3 (day 4, and so on), 7, 14, and 30.

For severe bites, in addition to injecting the vaccine as described above, double the dose of vaccine should be injected on days 0 and 3, and anti-rabies serum should be used at the same time as the vaccine on day 0. Anyone who uses anti-rabies serum or immunoglobulin in combination must get 2-3 booster shots of vaccine after the full course of vaccination is completed, i.e., one booster shot each on the 15th, 75th day, or the 10th, 20th, and 90th day after the full course of vaccination.

2. No bite prevention.

For healthy people who have not been bitten, three injections can be given at 0, 7 and 21 days. Give a booster shot one year later, and then another booster shot every 1-3 years thereafter.

3. Rabies vaccine validity period

The immunity of human rabies vaccine is effective for 6 months after the production of antibodies. These 6 months mean that if you are bitten by a dog again within 6 months after the injection, you do not need to be vaccinated. If you are bitten by a healthy dog during the period of rabies vaccination or within 6 months after the production of anti-rabies antibodies through vaccination testing, you can immediately wash the wound thoroughly with plenty of soapy water without the need for vaccination. If you are bitten by a rabies dog or a suspected rabies dog, you should receive two shots of vaccine on days 0 and 7.
