Water-based acrylic resins include acrylic resin emulsions, acrylic resin aqueous dispersions (also known as water-dilutable acrylics) and acrylic resin aqueous solutions. Emulsions are mainly synthesized by emulsifying oily olefin monomers in water with the initiation of aqueous free radical initiators, while resin aqueous dispersions are synthesized through different processes such as free radical solution polymerization or step solution polymerization. From the perspective of particle size: emulsion particle size > resin water dispersion particle size > aqueous solution particle size. From the application point of view, the first two are the most important.

Acrylic emulsion is mainly used as the base material of latex paint and occupies an important application in the architectural coatings market. Its application is still expanding. In recent years, the development and application of acrylic resin aqueous dispersions have attracted increasing attention, and their application in the fields of industrial coatings and civil coatings has been continuously expanded. According to the monomer composition, it is usually divided into pure acrylic emulsion, styrene acrylic emulsion, acetate acrylic emulsion, silicone acrylic emulsion, tertiary vinegar (tertiary carbonate-vinyl acetate) emulsion, tertiary propylene (tertiary carbonate-acrylate) emulsion, etc.

Acrylic water-based paint can be divided into two categories: water-dispersible and water-soluble. The former is a paint based on water emulsion or hydrosol. Water-soluble acrylic paint is made of copolymer resin with active cross-linkable functional groups. Most of them are thermosetting paints. Cross-linking resin may or may not be added during paint making, so that the active functional groups can cross-link during film formation to form a three-dimensional paint film. The development of water-based acrylic coatings can replace most of the organic volatile solvents with water while ensuring the various unique properties of acrylic coatings, thereby achieving the goal of significantly reducing air pollution.

Most water-soluble acrylic resins are anionic. Appropriate amounts of unsaturated carboxylic acids such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride, and methylene succinic acid are selected from the monomers of the copolymer resin to give the side chains carboxyl groups, which are then neutralized with organic amines or ammonia water to form salts to obtain water solubility. In addition, the side chains of the resin can also be introduced by selecting appropriate monomers to introduce -OH hydroxyl groups, -CONH2

The water solubility of the resin is increased by adding hydrophilic groups such as amide or -O-ether bonds. Neutralized salt acrylic resin can dissolve in water, but its water solubility is not very strong, often forming an emulsified liquid or a solution with high viscosity. Therefore, a certain proportion of hydrophilic cosolvent must be added to the water-soluble resin to increase the water solubility of the resin.
