How to treat double vision?

In layman's terms, double vision means that people see an object as two. This situation is medically called diplopia. Although people have two eyes, they do not see two images. The process of image processing from the eyes to the brain is more complicated. The brain, eyes and related cranial nerves are all involved in this process. If there is a problem with the eyes, brain or nerves, double vision may occur. There are several main ways to prevent double vision. For example, you can blink more often, especially when watching TV or computer for a long time, make sure your eyes are moist; you can also do more eye exercises, look around or gaze into the distance, you can apply a hot towel to your eyes, and it is best not to use your eyes continuously for more than half an hour.

1. Treatment of double vision

Since the symptoms of double vision are obvious, patients can easily notice it, and once the symptoms appear, most patients will choose to see an ophthalmologist. The focus of treatment is to find out the disease that causes the symptoms so as to implement targeted treatment. The cause of monocular ghosting is mostly problems with the eye itself, but for binocular ghosting, in addition to problems with the eye itself, there are many other reasons that can cause ghosting. Some systemic diseases, such as myasthenia gravis, diabetes, exophthalmos, brain tumor, stroke, aneurysm, multiple sclerosis, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, trauma (rupture of the eye socket wall, resulting in impaired movement of the external eye muscles), etc., may cause double vision.

1. Wearing glasses: Wearing glasses to correct refractive errors, or wearing lenses to correct small-angle eye deviations can help alleviate symptoms.

2. Eye patching and vision training: to treat amblyopia

3. Treat relevant diseases, such as cranial nerve or brain lesions, using medication or surgical treatment as required.

4. Eye muscle surgery: to correct strabismus, or to correct and reposition the external eye muscles whose movement is restricted after trauma.

2. What are the symptoms of double vision?

The main symptom is seeing one object as two objects. But in some patients, double vision may not be the main point, but blurred vision or difficulty seeing in a certain direction. Some patients may experience symptoms such as dizziness, headache, and nausea. In mild cases, double vision only occurs at certain viewing angles, while in severe cases, it causes problems when looking directly at objects. Symptoms also vary according to age of onset, duration of onset, and subjective alertness.

Tips

It is worth noting that children under the age of six rarely mention the problem of "double vision" to their parents. One reason is that they may not know that this is an abnormal phenomenon. In addition, because their visual development is still immature, the child's brain will not process unclear images, which is called "suppression." The younger the child, the greater his or her ability to suppress emotions. The vision of the suppressed eye will not develop accordingly. If this continues for a long time, it may cause amblyopia, which may lead to permanent vision damage.
