Drinking protein powder will make you fart

Drinking protein powder will make you fart

Protein powder can effectively increase the muscle content in a person's body, thereby achieving more obvious fitness results. However, before drinking protein powder, you must understand whether your body is allergic to protein powder, because some people are lactose intolerant, which may lead to diarrhea after drinking protein powder. If a person farts after drinking protein powder, what is going on?

The dilemma of drinking protein powder

What to do if you are lactose intolerant?

Many people have reported that drinking protein powder can cause diarrhea, indigestion, and even embarrassing situations such as smelly farts. This is actually caused by the lactose in the protein powder.

As we all know, whey protein powder is obtained by filtering and purifying the whey in milk, and there will be lactose residue in it.

Lactose only exists in mammalian milk in nature. One molecule of lactose can be digested into one molecule of glucose and one molecule of galactose. This requires an enzyme to cut lactose, and this enzyme is lactase. We have talked about this before: Li Jiao's study notes | Basic nutrition - full picture of carbohydrate information

But many adults have less lactase. For example, when we drink a glass of milk, the lactase we produce is only enough to process half of the lactose in it, so we cannot process the remaining half, which will cause us to have diarrhea. Some people simply don't have lactase, so they can't process lactose at all, and therefore can't drink milk or eat dairy products.

Why do we get diarrhea when we can't digest lactose?

Because if we cannot digest and absorb food, there will not be no reaction at all. These food residues that we cannot cut will increase the water content in the intestines, causing discomfort or diarrhea.

Four suggestions are given for people with lactose intolerance .

1: Drink yogurt. Since a large part of the lactose in yogurt has been processed by bacteria, there will be no problem if we drink it.

2: Drink milk/protein powder in small amounts and multiple times. For example, if you cannot digest one cup at a time, you can try half a cup at a time.

3: You can try drinking isolated whey protein powder. It has high purity and high price. Those who have the financial means can try it.

4: Appropriately supplement with probiotics that aid digestion.

These four methods are all aimed at people with lactase deficiency. Of course, some people may say that it would be fine if I simply didn’t eat dairy products. However, from the perspective of bone health, this is not recommended. It is still best to eat some dairy products regularly.
