The meniscus is a fibrous cartilage tissue in the knee joint. If a cyst occurs in the meniscus, it may even affect the patient's walking. Meniscus cysts mostly occur in young people and athletes. The causes of meniscus cysts can be roughly divided into two types: meniscus injury and internal meniscus lesions. When a meniscus cyst appears, the patient will definitely feel pain and tenderness in the affected area. Causes of meniscus cyst: 1. Meniscus injury can cause contusion and blood accumulation in the meniscus tissue, or synovial cells may be blocked inside the meniscus layer damage, and mucus is secreted, which gradually increases and forms a cyst. This is the main cause of meniscus cyst formation. 2. Internal degeneration, local necrosis and myxoid degeneration of the meniscus may first form tiny cysts in the meniscus. As the lesion progresses, cystic protrusions gradually form outward in the inner meniscus, eventually forming meniscus delamination injuries and meniscus cysts. Clinical manifestations: Chronic joint pain, pain after fatigue or long walking, pain when squatting, pain when going up and down stairs, which will be relieved or even disappear when resting, and may be accompanied by night pain. Some patients also have other symptoms. Some patients may experience typical symptoms of meniscus tear, such as locking of the joint, weak legs and snapping. Physical Examination: Some patients can see obvious lumps in the joint space, which usually increase when the knee is extended and become smaller or even disappear when the knee is flexed. A swelling is felt in the joint space, which is hard, tough and cystic in texture and may be accompanied by tenderness; signs of meniscus injury may also often be present. Auxiliary examination: It mainly relies on B-ultrasound and MRI examinations. Both examinations are non-invasive and have high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing meniscus cysts. diagnosis: 1. History of knee trauma. 2. Knee joint pain accompanied by local swelling. 3. Physical examination may reveal a swelling in the joint space, accompanied by tenderness; signs of meniscus injury may often be present. 4. MRI is the best means to diagnose meniscus cyst of the knee. 4. Diagnosis depends on arthroscopy . treat: If it is confirmed that the meniscus cyst is combined with meniscus injury, the best treatment option is arthroscopic surgery. Arthroscopy can be used to explore the condition of the meniscus. In addition to clearing the cyst, meniscus injuries can also be treated at the same time, including meniscus plasty or suturing. If only the cyst is removed without treating the meniscus injury at the same time, symptoms may remain after the operation and the cyst may easily recur. |
