What causes black gums

What causes black gums

There are many reasons for the blackening of gums, the main one being the lack of attention to oral hygiene. For example, a long-term smoking habit can cause the deposition of tobacco pigments on the gums, resulting in blackening of the gums. Some other medications can also easily cause the blackening of gums, especially tetracycline drugs. At the same time, the symptoms of blackening of gums caused by caries cannot be ignored.

1. Smoking causes black gums:

For some long-term smokers, tobacco pigment deposits will appear on the surface of the gums, and the gums will naturally appear black.

2. Drugs cause black gums:

Some medications people take on a daily basis may change the color of the oral mucosa and teeth. Among them, tetracycline can cause black gums, especially during the growth and development of children. If children take too much tetracycline, their teeth will be constantly stimulated by the drugs, which will cause black spots to appear on the surface of the teeth.

3. Tooth decay causes black gums:

If there is a problem with oral hygiene and there is too much dental plaque, it will corrode the tissue on the surface of the teeth, form cavities, and cause the gums to turn black. Therefore, you must remember to brush your teeth in the morning and evening to maintain good oral hygiene and prevent tooth decay.

Clinically, gingival tissue is divided into three parts: free gingiva, attached gingiva and gingival papilla. The attached gingiva of normal people is pink, while in a few normal people, diffuse, cloudy melanin deposits can be seen on the surface of the attached gingiva, which is especially common in people with dark skin and blacks. This pigmentation has no pathological significance and does not require treatment.
