What are the symptoms of liver failure

Liver failure is particularly harmful to the patient's health. Liver function declines sharply, and various symptoms often appear at this time. Because the liver cannot promote bile secretion, it will cause serious gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal bleeding, etc. The patient will have a long-term low fever, jaundice, etc.

(1) Acute liver failure:

Acute onset, with grade II or higher hepatic encephalopathy occurring within 2 weeks (manifested by personality changes, abnormal behavior, mental confusion, confusion, sleep disorders, decreased orientation and comprehension, etc.). Beijing You'an Hospital summarized the data of 50 patients with acute liver failure: 88% suffered from severe fatigue, 80% suffered from severe loss of appetite, 76% suffered from nausea and vomiting, and 84% suffered from abdominal distension. Among the patients, 78% are young and middle-aged people under the age of 40. Because of their good health in the past, they have a strong tolerance to the disease, so they can still continue to work or labor in the early stages of the disease. In addition, insufficient knowledge of the disease is also one of the reasons why the disease worsens and deteriorates rapidly.

(2) Subacute liver failure:

The onset is relatively acute, with a duration of 15 to 26 weeks. In addition to the same symptoms and signs as acute liver failure, the jaundice rapidly worsens. Due to the prolonged course of the disease, the incidence of various complications increases, such as ascites, intra-abdominal infection, hepatic encephalopathy, etc. Patients will experience abdominal distension, edema, and impaired consciousness. The diagnosis is also divided into ascites type or encephalopathy type.

(3) Acute-on-chronic (subacute) liver failure:

Patients with past chronic liver disease may develop acute or subacute liver decompensation in a short period of time, and the clinical symptoms are more severe than those of acute hepatitis.

(4) Chronic liver failure:

On the basis of cirrhosis, liver function progressively declines and decompensates, there is coagulation dysfunction, and various complications such as ascites, gastrointestinal bleeding, and hepatic encephalopathy.
