Sequelae of vision restoration surgery

Sequelae of vision restoration surgery

In life, more and more people are suffering from myopia. There are many reasons causing myopia in daily life. Everyone knows that after suffering from myopia, things will become blurry and unclear. There are currently many methods to relieve and treat myopia. In fact, many people choose surgical treatment. Although surgical treatment can achieve better therapeutic effects, there will also be some sequelae.

Undercorrection or overcorrection:

If the correction is insufficient, then myopia may remain after surgery. If the correction exceeds the expected degree, then hyperopia may occur. These are common.

Fear of light:

Within three to six months after myopia surgery, sensitivity to light increases, but generally it will gradually disappear after 6 months, and only in a few cases will it persist.

Double vision or glare:

This situation is generally more common in the early stages of surgery, especially at night when pupil dilation is more likely to occur. Most of them will gradually disappear, and only a few will persist.

Complications during surgery: Most are caused by poor corneal flap cutting, such as incomplete cutting or uneven cutting; the patient can recover as long as the corneal flap is repositioned, and surgery can be performed again after three months.

Poor epidermal healing:

It is more common in PR.K and can be treated with therapeutic contact lenses and artificial tears to help recovery.

Corneal opacity:

It will only occur after PR.K surgery, and is positively correlated with individual physique and the higher the degree of correction. It is most obvious 1-3 months after surgery and needs to be controlled with steroids and eye drops, and will mostly fade away slowly afterwards.

Corneal flap wrinkles or displacement:

It is only seen in LAS.IK and may be caused by trauma. It will cause irregular astigmatism and affect vision, which can be smoothed out surgically.

Subcorneal debris or epidermal invasion:

In mild cases, it will not affect vision, but in severe cases, the corneal flap must be opened to remove it.

Possible infection:

The chance of a wound being infected by bacteria due to surgery or post-operative uncleanliness is very low. As long as it is discovered early, most cases can be controlled with medication.

Some people have dry eyes:

Tear secretion will decrease after laser surgery, which may cause dry eye symptoms or aggravate the symptoms of people who already have dry eyes. Artificial tears treatment is required, and the condition will improve in about 3-6 months.

Presbyopia:

This situation is more complicated. People who are close to or over 40 years old may already have presbyopia. After myopia correction, they don’t need to wear glasses to see far away, but they still need to wear reading glasses to see close.

Myopia surgery cannot guarantee that the visual acuity will reach 1.0

And some cases may require additional surgery, or may still require glasses to achieve optimal vision.
