Treatment of sigmoid colon adenoma

Sigmoid colon adenoma is relatively common, and sometimes if it develops into a malignant lesion, the damage caused will be even more serious. Therefore, attention should be paid to correct treatment, especially if it is multiple and the polyps are large, further examination is needed to rule out the possibility of malignancy.

Adenomatous polyps are also called "polypoid adenomas". Mucosal adenomas are mostly polyp-like and are found in the gastrointestinal mucosa, more often in the colon. They may be solitary or multiple, with or without pedicles. Patients with familial polyposis have multiple polypoid adenomas of varying sizes in the colon mucosa, which may number up to hundreds or thousands, making the entire colon and rectal mucosa covered with polyps, which are prone to malignant changes.

1. A single polyp can be removed and examined simultaneously.

2. If there are multiple polyps or large polyps with signs of malignant transformation, a pathological biopsy can be performed through an anal colonoscopy to exclude malignant transformation.

3. Low-lying or long-pedunculated polyps can be removed by anoscopy, endoscopic scintigraphy, band ligation or direct transanal excision.

4. For broad-based or multiple polyps, partial intestinal wall resection can be performed through the abdomen, perineum, and sacrum.

5. High-positioned polyps can be removed by high-frequency electroresection with fiber colonoscopy.

6. If polyps have cancerous changes, they should be radically removed as tumors. The polyps removed during treatment can be pathologically examined to determine whether they are benign or malignant.
