Pain above the coccyx

Pain above the coccyx

If you sit in one place for a long time, you will feel numbness in your legs and pain above your coccyx when you stand up. This is mainly due to numbness of the nerves caused by prolonged compression of the bones. You can choose a softer place to sit and avoid this situation in daily life. Try not to sit for a long time. You can gently massage the area above your coccyx with both hands to relieve soreness and the symptoms will gradually improve. Let me introduce the specific method to you below.

Coccydynia, in a broad sense, is a syndrome of spontaneous pain in the area around the coccyx caused by various clinical reasons such as injury to the coccyx or sacrococcygeal joint, infection, tumor, after childbirth, after anorectal surgery, gynecological surgery, and so on.

disease

Patients usually experience coccyx pain when sitting or after sitting for a long time. The degree of pain varies depending on the hardness of the chair or the length of time they sit. The patient will feel tingling in the coccyx. The area around the coccyx is very sensitive and it will feel very painful when pressing the coccyx lightly with the fingers. Sometimes the pain radiates down the legs. Some people also experience more pain in the coccyx during bowel movements and during menstruation in women.

Because patients often sit on the side where their coccyx does not hurt, problems with their pelvis soon arise, causing the pelvis to press on the nerves, causing numbness and pain in the back and feet, and the situation becomes worse day by day.

Causes

1. Accidental injury, such as slipping and sitting on the ground

2. Improper sitting posture or coccyx injury in childhood

3. Injury to the coccyx and nearby tissues during childbirth

Causes of high incidence in women

1. Women's sacrum is wider and shorter, and its forward tilt is smaller than that of men. Their coccyx is moved back and is lower in the pelvis than that of men, making them more susceptible to injury.

2. When a woman becomes pregnant, the pelvic ligaments become looser and the coccyx can be easily pushed out and displaced during childbirth, causing pain.

3. During childbirth, women may experience coccygeal pain caused by birth trauma, which is mostly caused by first birth or difficult birth, as well as rough handling by the midwife. Especially when the pubic arch is narrow, when the fetal head passes through the posterior triangle of the pelvic outlet, the front of the coccyx is subjected to greater pressure, which can easily cause sprain or even fracture of the coccyx joint.

Treatment

1. Take painkillers

2. Electrotherapy, massage and proper exercise can all be helpful.

3. Local injection of analgesics can provide relief for some patients

4. If the coccyx is broken, surgery is required, but it is rare that the coccyx needs to be removed due to severe pain.

5. You need a proper cushion made of moderate material, not too hard or too soft.

Specific treatment can be achieved by changing the sitting posture, that is, try to sit with your thighs to reduce the weight and pressure on the buttocks; when sitting, you can use air cushions or air rings to suspend the painful area to prevent local compression and thus relieve pain.

Secondly, it can be treated with infrared, ultrasound, ion introduction, massage, acupuncture, cupping, Chinese medicine oral and external application, etc. If Chinese medicine is used for external application, the drugs that relax muscles and tendons, promote blood circulation and relieve pain can be put into a cloth bag, put into a pot, add water and boil it, and then apply wet heat to the affected area; local application of blood circulation and pain relief ointment or musk analgesic ointment is also effective; go to the hospital for local blockade, that is, use 2% procaine 2-4 ml plus hydrocortisone acetate 0.5-1 ml, and block the local pain point, which can achieve immediate results.

If the coccyx deformity is obvious and conservative treatment is ineffective, surgery is the only option.
