What is the cause of respiratory alkali poisoning

Respiratory alkali poisoning may cause shock, high fever, craniocerebral injury, memory loss and other hazards, so it is relatively harmful to the human body. The cause of respiratory alkali poisoning may be mental hyperventilation or metabolic abnormalities.

1. Psychogenic hyperventilation

This is a common cause of respiratory alkali poisoning, but it is usually not serious. In severe cases, there may be dizziness, paresthesia, and occasionally convulsions. Common in patients with hysterical attacks.

2. Abnormal metabolic process

In cases of hyperthyroidism and fever, ventilation may increase significantly to exceed the amount of carbon dioxide that should be expelled. It can cause respiratory alkali poisoning, but it is generally not serious. But all of them show that ventilation volume does not only depend on the H+ and carbon dioxide partial pressures in body fluids, but is also related to metabolic intensity and oxygen demand. Hyperventilation at this time may be caused by increased pulmonary blood flow through a reflex response.

3. Hypoxic hypoxia

Hyperventilation during hypoxic hypoxia is a compensation for hypoxia, but it can also cause excessive carbon dioxide excretion and respiratory alkali poisoning. It is common in people entering plateaus, mountains or high altitudes; patients with chest and lung diseases such as pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, pulmonary congestion, etc., which cause stimulation of the afferent nerves of the chest, pulmonary blood vessels or lung tissue and increase in reflex ventilation; in addition, some patients with congenital heart disease may also experience hyperventilation due to hypotonic hypoxemia caused by increased right-to-left shunt. These all cause a decrease in plasma H2CO3 and result in respiratory alkali poisoning.

4. Central nervous system diseases

Some patients with encephalitis, meningitis, brain tumors, cerebrovascular accidents and craniocerebral injuries have their respiratory centers stimulated and excited, resulting in hyperventilation.
