What is the reason for black stool and how to treat it

Black stool is a situation that people often encounter in daily life, but most people do not understand why black stool occurs. In fact, black stools are mostly caused by upper gastrointestinal bleeding. In addition, it is also related to blood or liver in the food eaten the day before.

Black stool is a manifestation of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. When there is bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract such as the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, upper jejunum, pancreas and bile duct, the iron in hemoglobin in red blood cells combines with sulfide to form iron sulfide under the action of intestinal bacteria, making the stool appear black. This type of black stool is shiny and black, and its appearance is like tar, so it is also called tarry stool. Passing tarry stools is a sign of upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

1. If you have eaten a lot of animal liver and blood, such as cow blood, pig blood, pig liver, etc. the day before, the black stool is related to these foods, so don't pay attention to it.

2. Continuously taking some medications will also have a certain impact on the color of stool. Common ones include ferrous sulfate, potassium bismuth citrate, etc. As long as you stop taking the medicine for a period of time, the color of your stool will return to normal.

3. If the color of the stool is like tar, not only black but also shiny, this indicates pathological black stool, which is mostly caused by upper gastrointestinal bleeding. You should go to the hospital immediately for a gastroscopy to confirm the diagnosis.

4. Once upper gastrointestinal bleeding is confirmed, pay close attention to the patient's vital signs, including blood pressure, respiration, heart rate, etc., and take corresponding measures at any time to prevent shock caused by large amounts of bleeding.

5. Use drugs to stop bleeding or use a three-chamber two-balloon catheter to stop bleeding. At the same time, actively prepare blood sources to replenish blood volume for the patient.

6. If the amount of bleeding is heavy and conservative treatment is ineffective, surgery should be performed immediately to save the patient's life.
