Is onychomycosis difficult to treat?

Onychomycosis is a relatively common disease. Although it is not particularly serious, it does affect people's health. For example, it will affect the beauty of the fingers. It is also contagious and will affect the flexibility of the fingers, etc. Generally speaking, onychomycosis is relatively easy to treat, but if some people have poor physical constitution or the treatment is not careful enough, this can easily lead to recurrence of onychomycosis. Let's take a look at this aspect.

Is onychomycosis difficult to treat?

Onychomycosis is generally a nail lesion caused by fungal infections such as dermatophytes and non-dermatophytes. Currently, 60% to 90% of onychomycosis patients are caused by dermatophyte infections, and the cure rate for patients caused by dermatophytes can reach 90%.

Several factors that increase the recurrence of onychomycosis

1. Infection: Onychomycosis is cured, but tinea pedis and tinea manuum are not cured at the same time, resulting in reinfection of the fingers (toes), which is an important factor causing the recurrence of onychomycosis.

2. Consolidation: Some patients think they are completely cured when their nails are almost back to normal shape, so they stop taking the medication. If the medication is not consolidated for a period of time, relapses may occur.

3. Nail malnutrition: Nail malnutrition caused by other diseases reduces the ability of the nail plate to defend itself against pathogenic fungi, resulting in the recurrence of onychomycosis.

Who is more likely to get onychomycosis? Why is onychomycosis difficult to cure? Why does onychomycosis recur?

4. Trauma: Repeated trauma may cause pathogenic fungi to invade the nail plate and cause recurrence, but this situation is generally rare.

5. Chemical irritation: Long-term contact with substances such as gasoline, paint, detergents and strong alkaline soaps changes the acidity and defense ability of the normal skin deck surface.

Four types of people are most likely to suffer from onychomycosis

1. People who wear high heels or small-sized shoes for a long time: After wearing high heels or small-sized shoes, the force on the forefoot increases, and the five fingers are squeezed against each other, which can easily cause poor local blood circulation, nail deformation and nail peeling.

2. People with weakened immune function: The incidence of onychomycosis is high among the elderly, pregnant women and diabetics. Most patients with onychomycosis first have fungal infections in other parts of the body, which is the main source of pathogens.

3. People who often do manicures and nail care: During the manicure process, many chemical substances used will make the nails more and more fragile. Cutting, grinding and other actions may cause nail damage, leading to indirect fungal infection and causing onychomycosis.

4. Housewives, chefs and certain workers: These people are in contact with water or various chemicals for a long time, which causes the deck to be soaked and corroded, changes the acidity and alkalinity and defense ability of the deck surface, and makes it easier for fungi to invade.
