Drooling while sleeping

Drooling while sleeping

Many people drool from the corners of their mouths when they sleep at night. This is mainly caused by improper sleeping posture. For example, sleeping on the table makes drooling more likely. In addition, sleeping with your mouth open or having a stuffy nose or rhinitis can cause drooling symptoms. You can understand the causes of the disease, and then choose treatment methods based on these causes to correct the habit of drooling while sleeping.

What is drooling while sleeping?

Drooling is common in children aged 6 months to 3 years. This is because the salivary glands of children secrete more saliva during this period, and the oral cavity is shallow and cannot regulate excess liquid in the mouth, so drooling occurs. This phenomenon will gradually disappear with age. If it is accompanied by other symptoms, or if adults drool, you should pay attention to several small problems and disease factors.

Reasons for drooling while sleeping

1. Sleeping posture

Improper sleeping posture should be the most common cause of drooling, such as sleeping on the table, sleeping on the side, etc. Due to gravity and other factors that cause the mouth to be slightly open, drooling is easy to occur. This kind of situation can be improved by adjusting the sleeping position.

2. Oral hygiene reasons

The oral cavity is most suitable for bacterial reproduction due to its temperature and humidity. In addition, as an eating mouth, food residues and sugar substances are easily retained in the gaps between teeth and on the tooth surfaces. Under this stimulation, it is easy to cause some oral diseases, and naturally drooling is also prone to occur. Sometimes drooling may occur due to eating too sour or spicy food before going to bed.

Causes of drooling

In addition to the above-mentioned "minor problems", sometimes drooling is not simple, it may also be one of these 5 types of diseases.

1. Spleen deficiency

According to traditional Chinese medicine, the spleen is responsible for transportation and transformation, and its fluid is saliva. A big reason why adults drool while sleeping is due to spleen deficiency, which causes water to fail to be transported and transformed, making it difficult to nourish the internal organs. Muscles lack elasticity and are prone to relaxation, making it easy for them to open their mouths after falling asleep, causing drooling. This is mostly related to overwork, eating disorders, long-term illness and physical weakness. To improve the condition, you need to pay attention to strengthening the spleen and stomach. You can choose foods such as red dates, yam, honey, and lotus seeds.

2. Cardiovascular disease

Diseases such as stroke and arteriosclerosis are more common in middle-aged and elderly people. If you suddenly start drooling, have crooked mouth corners when looking in the mirror in the morning, or have headaches, you should pay attention to the possibility of a stroke. If you often drool while sleeping and do not have the above-mentioned minor problems, regardless of whether you have facial paralysis or not, you should get checked in time to rule out the three highs.

3. Neurological dysfunction

That is, neuroregulatory disorders, which can occur after overdose, extreme fatigue or taking certain medications, and are caused by the brain sending incorrect signals. Improvement requires rest.

4. Oral inflammation

As a further development of poor oral hygiene, inflammation can stimulate the secretion of saliva, causing oral pain and leading to drooling. Generally, drooling will disappear after the inflammation is cured.

5. Facial diseases

It often occurs after the face is exposed to cold, wind or a cold. It is closely related to facial paralysis, and common symptoms include facial asymmetry.

Prevention and treatment of drooling

For those who are prone to drooling, you should pay attention to adjusting your sleeping position and oral hygiene. For those with deformed teeth, pay attention to correcting them. You need to eat a balanced diet on a daily basis, pay attention to the combination of work and rest, and be careful to prevent the occurrence of diseases that can cause drooling.
