Why are my eyes getting smaller?

Many people will find that their eyes are getting smaller. These people should pay attention to whether they wear glasses regularly, because wearing glasses will also make the eyes smaller. Wearing glasses for a long time can easily cause the eyes to deform and changes to the area around the eyes.

1. Wearing glasses will make your eyes smaller

Many people know that once you get glasses, you should wear them to prevent the degree of myopia from increasing. But some people ask, won’t the glasses become deformed if you wear them for a long time? In fact, the eyes become smaller due to the following reasons. Let’s take a look.

2. Eye deformation is related to changes in the eye axis

If the eye is compared to an optical instrument, then the distance from the outermost layer of the cornea that receives light to the innermost layer of the retina that senses light can be regarded as a central axis of the optical system, namely the eye axis. The normal eye axis is about 24mm.

Generally speaking, for every 1mm increase in the eye axis, the degree of myopia increases by 300 degrees. Many patients with high myopia who wear glasses often have large eyeballs, and their eyeballs appear to bulge outward when they are not wearing glasses. In fact, this is not a deformation of the eyes, but the lengthening of the eye axis.

3. Eye deformation may also be a contrast illusion

Sometimes we feel that our eyes are deformed, perhaps it is an illusion of contrast. Suitable glasses will not cause damage to our eyes. It is just that through the lenses of the myopic glasses, our eyes become smaller. In fact, there will be no problem once you get used to it.

In addition, if the glasses are too heavy and press the base of the nose flatter on both sides, or if the frames are too small and press the skin on both sides of the eyes for a long time, you may feel that your eyes are deformed after taking off the glasses, but in fact this is also an illusion of contrast.

For common high myopia with protruding eyeballs, this is one of the characteristic manifestations of pathological myopia, and the inevitability of its occurrence and aggravation has nothing to do with whether or not people wear glasses. The so-called eye deformation of some children or teenagers is mostly caused by contrast illusion, so there is no need to worry that wearing glasses will cause eye deformation.
