Is sodium bisulfite toxic?

I believe that anyone who has studied chemistry will be familiar with sodium bisulfite. Because sodium bisulfite is often used as a bleaching agent in our daily life, which makes our food look more beautiful and can greatly increase people's desire to buy. But many friends are still worried about compressing sodium bisulfate. So is sodium bisulfite toxic? Regarding this question, please learn with me in the next period of time.

Sodium sulfite is toxic

Sodium sulfite, a common sulfite, is a colorless, monoclinic crystal or powder. It is irritating to eyes, skin and mucous membranes and can pollute water sources. High thermal decomposition produces toxic sulfide fumes. It can be used as a reducing agent, preservative, dechlorinating agent, etc.

1. Health Hazards: Routes of entry: Inhalation and ingestion.

Health Hazards: This product can decompose into hydrogen sulfide in the gastrointestinal tract and can cause hydrogen sulfide poisoning after oral administration. Corrosive to skin and eyes.

2. Toxicological data and environmental behavior Acute toxicity: LD50820mg/kg (oral in mice); 950mg/kg (intravenous in mice) Sulfides in water include soluble H2S, HS-, S2-, as well as soluble sulfides present in suspension, acid-soluble metal sulfides and non-ionized inorganic and organic sulfides. Water containing sulfides is mostly black and has a pungent odor, which is mainly due to the continuous release of H2S gas from the water. 8μg/m3 of H2S in the air can make people's sense of smell sensitive, and the threshold of H2S in water is 0.035μg/L. Sulfide in water is easily hydrolyzed and released into the air in the form of H2S. When absorbed in large quantities by humans, it will immediately cause nausea and vomiting, and may even cause difficulty breathing, suffocation, etc., resulting in a strong sense of poisoning. If the concentration in the air reaches 15-30 mg/m3, it will cause inflammation of the eye membrane and damage the optic nerve. H2S that escapes into the air can react with disulfide bonds (-SS-) in cytochromes, oxidases, proteins, and amino acids in the human body when inhaled for a long time, affecting the oxidation process of cells, causing cellular hypoxia and endangering human life. If you drink water with high sulfide content for a long time, it will cause dull sense of taste, loss of appetite, weight loss, poor hair growth, and in severe cases, exhaustion and death.

Hazardous Characteristics: May explode if impacted or rapidly heated.

It decomposes in contact with acid, releasing highly toxic and flammable gases.

I believe that through the above learning, our friends have a deeper understanding of whether sodium bisulfite is toxic. But I would also like to remind everyone that the country has standard regulations on the use of sodium bisulfite in food. Therefore, friends must carefully read the food packaging when buying food in daily life.
