How to prevent potatoes from sprouting

Autumn is the season when potatoes mature. At this time, fresh potatoes have just been dug out of the ground and taste very delicious. Moreover, because there is less water in potatoes, it is also convenient to store them. Most people will store more potatoes in autumn so that they will have vegetables to eat in winter. However, in spring, potatoes are prone to sprouting if they are not eaten. So how can potatoes prevent sprouting?

1. Wash the dirt off the surface of the potatoes, wipe off the moisture, seal them with plastic bags, and put them in the refrigerator. They are not easy to germinate because the temperature in the refrigerator is relatively low and they are not exposed to sunlight for a long time. The bag containing potatoes cannot contain any moisture. This method can probably be preserved for more than a week.

2. Buy a few apples, put them together with the potatoes, seal them in a bag, and place them in a dark place to prevent the potatoes from sprouting. This uses the ethylene gas emitted by apples to slow down the "development" of potatoes.

3. The above two methods are more suitable for small-scale storage. To store large quantities of potatoes, you can try covering them with straw and storing them in a dark, cool, and dry environment. This way, they can be stored until the autumn of the following year.

4. Before storage, soak the potatoes in a one-quarter concentration of dilute hydrochloric acid solution for about 15 minutes. In this way, the potatoes can be stored for a year without affecting their edibility.

5. Place the selected potatoes in a place with a temperature of 12 to 16 degrees. Then gradually lower the temperature to 3 to 5 degrees Celsius within 40 days, and keep the relative humidity between 85% and 95%. This way, they can be stored for a long time.

6. In the countryside, you can dig an earth cellar with a suitable temperature. If you ventilate it every few days, the potatoes can be stored for several months without going bad.

After harvesting, potatoes can be stored until the autumn of the following year. They should generally be covered with straw and stored in a dark, cool and dry place. They should be protected from frost in winter and prevented from sprouting in spring. If they are to sprout, they must be dried in the oven or exposed to the sun.

Applying peppermint oil to the outside of potatoes can extend their germination time.

The solanine content in potatoes increases with rising temperature. Another influencing factor is light. Photosynthesis will increase the solanine content. Therefore, it is recommended that you do not buy too many potatoes. It is also best to put them in a cool place such as a refrigerator.

The suitable storage temperature for potatoes is 0-5℃, and the relative humidity is about 90%. 4℃ is the most suitable storage temperature for most varieties. At this time, the tubers are not easy to germinate or germinate very little, and are not easy to shrink.

Be careful to avoid potatoes with sweet potatoes, so potatoes should not be stored together with sweet potatoes. Otherwise, either the sweet potato will become hard or the potato will sprout.

Preservation of potatoes: Dry in a cool, ventilated place for 3-5 days, then store. You can put them in a clean cardboard box and put some dry fine soil between each layer of potatoes. Alternatively, place 1 or 2 green apples in the middle of the potatoes to help keep them fresh and prevent them from growing teeth.

Choose good quality potatoes, wash them and dry them. Then, add water to the pot, heat it to about 70%, add salt water (the ratio of water to salt is 10:1), stir thoroughly and turn off the heat. Next, put the potatoes into water while they are still hot, soak for 1-1.5 minutes, take them out and dry them, and place them in a dry place. They can be stored for a long time without sprouting. When using this method, it is not advisable to store the potatoes in plastic bags.
