What should I do if water gets into my ears while swimming

In the hot summer, many people go swimming. Swimming is a national sport and it is not only simple. It is very comfortable to soak in cold water without worrying about heatstroke, and there is no need to stay in an air-conditioned room to destroy the body's immunity. Swimming has a good effect on weight loss, regulating the body and beauty. In addition to these, the most important thing to be careful about when swimming is water getting into the nose and ears, which can be very uncomfortable. So what should you do if water gets into your ears while swimming!

Many people go swimming in the summer and often encounter water entering their ears. Because water has a certain tension, it forms a barrier after entering the narrow external auditory canal and divides the external auditory canal into two sections. Due to the gravity of the water, a secondary pressure is generated between the water barrier and the eardrum, maintaining the pressure balance on both sides of the water barrier and making it difficult for water to flow out automatically.

Sometimes there is a large earwax obstruction in the external auditory canal, and when water enters the ear canal, it is more likely to wrap around the earwax and is less likely to flow out.

When water enters the ear, the ear will feel stuffy, hearing loss, dizziness, and extreme discomfort, so people often want to drain the water out very quickly. Some people even use dirty clips, matchsticks, small keys, etc. to clean their ears. Although this may break the water barrier and allow the water to flow out, it can also easily damage the external auditory canal or even the eardrum, leading to ear diseases. I would like to share with you

When water enters the ear, it should be drained out immediately. The most common methods are:

1. Single-leg jumping method: Point the affected ear downward and use the gravity of the water to make the water flow downward and out of the external auditory canal.

2. Mobilize the external auditory canal: continuously press the tragus with your palm or pull the auricle with your fingers; or repeatedly open your mouth and move the temporomandibular joint. These can make the skin of the external auditory canal move up and down and left and right or change the stability of the water barrier and the pressure, allowing the water to flow out of the external auditory canal.

3. External auditory canal cleaning method: Use a clean, thin cotton swab to gently probe into the external auditory canal, and once it touches the water barrier, you can suck out the water.

Due to unclean swimming pool or river water, sewage enters the ears and causes infection of the external auditory canal skin and eardrum, or improper handling of water in the ears, such as unclean ear digging, etc., which can often cause the following ear diseases: external otitis, external auditory canal furunculosis, cerumen obstruction, tympanitis, and suppurative otitis media.

If the above symptoms occur after water enters the ear, you should temporarily stop swimming and go to the hospital for examination and symptomatic treatment.

4. Side-lying method: After trying all the above methods, lie down on your side when you sleep at night, that is, the ear that has water in it, but do not block it, because if it is blocked, the air pressure will affect the outflow of water.

Not everyone will have water in their ears when swimming. It is understandable that water gets into the ears due to not wearing earplugs and taking protective bacteria. We all have an eardrum in our ears. If water in the ears is not handled properly, it will cause bacterial infection and easily lead to otitis media. What should you do if water gets into your ears while swimming! First of all, you need to clean your ears and do daily care. Stop swimming and don't pick your ears hard.
