What does testosterone mean

What does testosterone mean

Generally, all indicators in a normal person's body are within a fixed normal range. If it exceeds or is lower than this value, it means that there are some problems with our body. In fact, testosterone also has a fixed range. If it exceeds or is lower than this range, there will be certain dangers. However, many friends do not know much about what testosterone is. So what does testosterone mean?

Testosterone is the most important male hormone (androgen) and is mainly secreted by the testicles.

Testosterone (also known as testosterone, testosterone or testosterone) is a steroid hormone secreted by the testicles of men or the ovaries of women. The adrenal glands also secrete a small amount of testosterone. It is the main male sex hormone and anabolic steroid. Whether for men or women, it has important effects on health, including enhancing sexual desire, strength, immune function, and fighting osteoporosis. According to statistics, the amount of testosterone secreted by adult males is 20 times that of adult females.

Adults: Male 14-25.4 nmol/L Female 1.3-2.8 nmol/L

Children: Male <8.8nmol/L Female <0.7nmol/L

During pregnancy: 2.7 to 5.3 nmol/L

The ovarian follicles can secrete testosterone, accounting for about 1/4; the testosterone secreted by the adrenal cortex also accounts for 1/4, and the testosterone converted from extraglandular androstenedione accounts for about 1/2. Testosterone is measured by radioimmunoassay. The normal value for women is 0.7-3.1umol/L, and for men it is 9.0-45.8umol/L.

Increased testosterone: idiopathic male precocious puberty, familial male precocious puberty, adrenal hyperplasia, adrenal cortical tumors (adenocarcinomas are markedly increased, adenomas are also often increased), testicular tumors, testicular feminization, polycystic ovary syndrome, ovarian virilizing tumors, pinealoma, idiopathic hirsutism, hypothyroidism, androgen, HCG and estrogen treatment are moderate. Reduced: Trisomy 21, uremia, myotonic dystrophy, liver dysfunction, trapped testis, primary or secondary hypogonadism, after discontinuation of androgen therapy, etc.

Decreased testosterone: male testicular dysgenesis, quasi-anoorchia syndrome, hypothalamic or pituitary hypogonadism. In addition, it is also seen in patients with hyperthyroidism, cirrhosis, renal failure, severe trauma, and long-term illness.

The above is a detailed introduction about testosterone. We can have a relative understanding of this aspect, and we should pay more attention to whether our testosterone values are within the normal range. If there is any abnormality, we must check it in time. This is to ensure our own health, so as to discover some hidden diseases in time and treat them as soon as possible.
