How to treat mild meningitis?

Meningitis is a type of disease mainly caused by infection of the meninges or cerebrospinal cord. Generally, patients often have bacterial or viral infections when they develop this disease. Any part of the body is often prone to complications, such as upper respiratory tract infections, so timely treatment is required. So how should mild meningitis be treated?

Bacterial meningitis is a life-threatening illness and should be treated immediately. Go to the emergency room immediately if symptoms occur.

The treatment of bacterial meningitis is mainly based on finding bacteria through cerebrospinal fluid smear and culture, selecting effective antibiotics based on drug sensitivity tests, and providing timely treatment to reduce the occurrence of sequelae. It is also necessary to treat high fever symptomatically, control convulsions, reduce intracranial pressure, relieve cerebral edema, and use hormones to reduce intracranial inflammatory adhesions.

Antibiotics are ineffective against viral meningitis and antiviral drugs should be added.

1. Purulent meningitis

It is caused by some kind of bacterial infection. There are three types, namely Haemophilus influenzae type B, Neisseria meningitidis (diplococcus) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus). About 80% of cases of meningitis in the United States are bacterial. Usually, a small number of healthy people carry these germs in their noses or on their bodies, which do not harm the human body. They are spread through coughing or sneezing. People are most susceptible to infection when they have a cold because rhinitis makes it extremely easy for bacteria to enter the brain.

2. Tuberculous meningitis

It is a non-purulent inflammation of the meninges caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, accounting for about 6% of systemic tuberculosis. After Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection spreads through the blood, it implants under the pia mater to form tuberculous nodules. After the nodules rupture, a large number of tuberculosis bacteria enter the subarachnoid space. In recent years, the morbidity and mortality rates of tuberculous meningitis have been on the rise. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve efficacy and reduce mortality.

3. Viral meningitis

85% to 95% are caused by enteroviruses, including poliovirus, coxsackievirus A and B, echovirus, etc., followed by mumps virus, herpes simplex virus and adenovirus.

4. Cryptococcal meningitis

Meningitis can also be caused by fungi. The most common one is Cryptococcus, which is found in pigeons. Healthy people are not susceptible to fungus-related meningitis, but this is not the case for those infected with HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS.

Patients should be isolated and treated in the early stages, and should try to avoid group activities and not always take children to public places. It is best to wear a mask when going out. They can also be vaccinated for treatment. It is very important for patients with meningitis to pay more attention and avoid catching cold.
