Effects and functions of Patchouli

Dosage and Usage of Patchouli

For internal use: decoct in water, 1.5-3 qian; or make into pills or powder. For external use: decoct in water and gargle; or burn and grind into powder for application.

Selection of Patchouli

① Treat typhoid fever, headache, chills and fever, wheezing and coughing, cold pain in the heart and abdomen, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and cholera, rumbling sounds in the internal organs, mountain mist and malaria, swelling all over the body, stabbing pain in the blood and qi before and after childbirth, and malnutrition in children: 1 liang each of dried tangerine peel, angelica dahurica, perilla, and poria (peeled), 2 liang each of pinellia tuber, atractylodes macrocephala, tangerine peel (remove the white part), Magnolia officinalis (remove the rough skin and roast with ginger juice), and bitter stem, 3 liang of patchouli (remove the soil), and 2.5 liang of liquorice (roasted). Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, take 2 qian each time, add a cup of water, three slices of ginger and a date, boil together until 70% done, drink while hot. ②For treating vomiting and diarrhea in summer: 2 liang of talcum powder (fried), 2.5 qian of patchouli, and 0.5 fen of cloves. Grind it into powder, take one or two qian each time, mixed with rice water. (《Lecturer Yu’s Experience Prescription》)

③Treat cholera vomiting and diarrhea: dried tangerine peel (remove the white part) and patchouli leaves (remove the dirt). Divide into equal parts, take 5 qian each time, add 1.5 cups of water, boil until 70% done, drink while warm at any time. (Huishengsan from Baiyixuanfang)
