Why do my eyes turn red after taking a shower?

Many people have had this experience: after taking a shower in the cold winter, they will find that their eyes turn red, and then return to normal after a while. There is no need to worry about red eyes after taking a shower. This is a phenomenon caused by conjunctival congestion and is a normal physiological phenomenon. So why do eyes turn red after taking a shower? Let’s take a closer look.

Don't worry if your eyes turn red after taking a shower. This is a transient conjunctival congestion. It is normal for the conjunctiva to become congested after being stimulated by hot water and detergents for a long time during bathing. It's just that your reaction may be more obvious due to individual differences. Just be careful not to let the cleaning solution flow into your eyes when bathing.

The lips and cheeks of a healthy person are always rosy in color. This is because the lips and cheeks are rich in capillaries. However, the conjunctiva covering the white of our eyes (medically known as the "sclera"), although also with very dense capillaries, appears clean porcelain white, as if there is not a single blood vessel.

If you use your fingers to hold open your eyelids and look closely, you will see that there are a few sparsely distributed capillaries on the conjunctiva surrounding the black pupil (cornea), and their number only accounts for about 1% of the entire conjunctival blood vessels. What is strange is that once the eyes are stimulated by something, the sclera immediately turns red. When the irritation is eliminated, the red eyeball turns white again.

You don't need to worry about the phenomenon of red eyes after taking a shower, because the lips and faces of healthy people are red. This is mainly due to the abundant capillaries. After taking a hot shower, people's body temperature increases, making blood circulation more smooth, accelerating the circulation of blood in the capillaries, and making the eyes look red.
