What causes the lower left eyelid to twitch

Our previous view on eyelid twitching was that left eye twitching means good fortune, while right eye twitching means disaster. In fact, this statement is not correct. Symptoms such as twitching of the lower left eyelid are mostly caused by eye diseases or nervous tension. However, because it is difficult to distinguish, I always don’t know what is causing my lower left eyelid twitching, nor do I know how to deal with it. To this end, let us understand what causes the lower left eyelid to twitch.

The eyelids are responsible for closing the eyes and are composed of the orbicularis oculi muscle surrounding the eyes. What we call eyelid twitching is actually caused by abnormal excitement of the nerves controlling the eyelid muscles, that is, some of the orbicularis oculi muscle fibers cannot continue to contract independently in a short period of time, thereby affecting the skin overlying it.

Generally, eyelid twitching occurs more frequently when you are overly tired, use your eyes for too long or lack of sleep. Other factors such as strong light, stimulation caused by drugs, foreign objects blown into the eyes, frequent smoking and drinking, etc. can irritate the eyes and cause eyelid twitching.

The most common eyelid twitching is "muscle twitching" of the orbicularis oculi muscle, which lasts for a few seconds to a few minutes each time. Under normal circumstances, it will recover automatically after a period of time. You can also close your eyes and rest, or apply a hot towel to your eyes, as well as eat a balanced diet and get enough sleep to shorten the duration of eyelid twitching.

If your eyelids keep twitching, you should see a doctor immediately. If your eyelids twitch along with the muscles on half of your face, eyebrows and corners of your mouth, it may be a spasm caused by stimulation of the facial nerve. You should actively seek treatment, otherwise you will develop strabismus.

As for eyelid twitching, Chinese medicine believes that it is caused by long-term illness and overwork that damages the heart and spleen, or by blood deficiency in the liver and spleen that causes wind over time.

If it is caused by deficiency of both heart and spleen, and accompanied by insomnia, forgetfulness, irritability, palpitations, loss of appetite and fatigue, it can be treated with "Gui Pi Tang" with modifications; if it is caused by wind caused by blood deficiency, and the heart beats constantly, and is affected by the eyebrows, forehead, face and corners of the mouth and cannot be controlled, it can be treated with "Danggui Huoxue Yin" with modifications.

The above is an introduction to what causes your lower left eyelid to twitch. It should be noted here that occasional twitching of the lower left eyelid is normal in most cases, but frequent occurrence may be a manifestation of disease. Therefore, you should always pay attention to changes in your body so that you can detect them in time and avoid missing the best treatment period.
