13 kinds of food that should be carefully placed in the refrigerator

Many people have become accustomed to putting food bought from outside into the refrigerator, believing that the frozen environment in the refrigerator can greatly increase the freshness period of the food. But in fact, we all overlook the fact that some foods are not suitable for being put in the refrigerator. Please note that if the following foods are placed in the refrigerator, they will become moldy and spoil, and even breed harmful bacteria.

Foods that should not be stored in the refrigerator

1. Chocolate

Once chocolate is taken out of the refrigerator, a layer of white frost will form on its surface at room temperature, making it very easy to mold and deteriorate, losing its original flavor.

2. Tomatoes

After being frozen at low temperatures, the tomatoes become blistered and appear soft and rotten, or they may break apart, have black spots on the surface, cannot be cooked through, have no freshness, and in severe cases become sour and rotten.

3. Ham

If ham is stored in a refrigerator at a low temperature, the moisture in it will freeze, the fat will precipitate, the leg meat will become lumpy or loose, the meat will change taste, and it will easily spoil.

4. Banana

If bananas are stored in a place below 12°C, they will turn black and rot.

5. Fresh lychees

If fresh lychees are left in an environment of 0℃ for a day, their skin will turn black and the flesh will change its taste.

6. Cucumber

Because the storage temperature in the refrigerator is generally around 4℃ to 6℃, and the suitable storage temperature for cucumbers is 10℃ to 12℃. If kept in the refrigerator for a long time, the skin of the cucumbers will become waterlogged, losing their unique flavor and even becoming rotten and inedible.

7. Green pepper

If green peppers are stored in the refrigerator for a long time, they will suffer from frostbite - turning black, softening, and changing taste. The suitable storage temperature for green peppers is 7℃ to 8℃, and the storage temperature in the refrigerator is generally around 4℃ to 6℃, so they should not be stored for a long time.

8. Honey

If you found a jar of honey from 1,000 years ago, you would find that it was as fresh as the day you poured it in - honey has a natural ability to preserve freshness. Putting honey in the refrigerator will accelerate the rate at which its sugars crystallize, making it almost dough-like and difficult to scoop.

9. Coffee

Neither coffee powder nor coffee beans should be placed in your refrigerator kingdom. The trouble with coffee is that it's basically like a sponge that absorbs all the smells around it, so if you put coffee in the fridge, it will absorb all the smells in your fridge and there's no way to get it back to its original flavor.

Another problem is that when the temperature changes instantly, the coffee loses its moisture, which basically eliminates the aroma of the coffee.

10. Onion

Much like tomatoes, onions can become very mealy or even moldy if left in the refrigerator for too long. If the onion is already cut, the moisture will escape no matter how tightly you wrap it.

Plus, a cut onion will impart its scent to whatever it touches, which is why many wooden cutting boards can make everything smell like onions in no time.

11. Potatoes

Generally speaking, low temperatures break down the starch in potatoes; therefore, putting potatoes in the refrigerator will give you sweet or gritty potatoes (starch is a polymer of glucose that can be broken down into maltose and glucose - editor's note). In this way, no matter what dish you make with it, it will hardly be delicious.
