【Effects】Soothes the liver and promotes qi circulation, promotes blood circulation and relieves pain.

【Indications】Syndrome of stagnation of liver qi. Pain in the ribs, chest tightness and sighing, depression and irritability, or belching, abdominal distension and a stringy pulse.

[Usage] Boil two cups of water for eight minutes and take before meals.

[Explanation of the prescription] The syndrome of Chaihu Shugan San is liver qi stagnation, which cannot be released. The qi stagnation leads to blood stasis, thus the symptoms of pain in the ribs and flanks are seen. The prescription uses Sini San to remove the bitter orange, and adds dried tangerine peel, bitter orange peel, chuanxiong, and cyperus rotundus to enhance the effects of soothing the liver and promoting qi, activating blood circulation and relieving pain. Therefore, after taking it, the liver qi is regulated, the blood vessels are unobstructed, the pain is relieved, and other symptoms are eliminated.

6 grams of Bupleurum, 9 grams of Paeonia lactiflora, 6 grams of Citrus aurantium, 3 grams of Radix Glycyrrhizae, 6 grams of Tangerine Peel, 6 grams of Ligusticum chuanxiong, and 6 grams of Cyperus rotundus.

Stagnation of liver qi is characterized by pain in the ribs and flanks, sighing, and a stringy pulse. Or there may be alternating chills and fever, abdominal distension, poor appetite and poor appetite.

The combination of these medicines has the effects of soothing the liver, promoting qi, activating blood circulation and relieving pain.

Clinical Application:

1. This prescription is a commonly used prescription for treating flank pain caused by liver qi stagnation. The key points of diagnosis are pain in the ribs, slightly relaxed sighing and a stringy pulse.

2. If there are obvious signs of blood stasis, add Danshen and Shidengsan; if there are also belching, acid regurgitation, and bitter taste in the mouth, add Zuojin Wan; if there are also signs of food stagnation, add malt, chicken gizzard lining, etc.
