Is it necessary to take medicine if the thyroid cancer is not completely removed

Incomplete removal of thyroid cancer may require medication or may not, which is related to the pathological type of thyroid cancer, surgical method, etc. If it is papillary thyroid cancer or follicular thyroid cancer, generally no medication is required after surgery, but for other types of thyroid cancer, you may need to take medication as prescribed by your doctor.

1. Need to take medicine:

1. Papillary thyroid cancer: The main purpose of thyroidectomy is to improve the disease and reduce recurrence. Levothyroxine sodium tablets are often used for thyroid hormone supplementation after surgery;

2. Follicular thyroid carcinoma: Follicular thyroid carcinoma has a high incidence of distant metastasis, and the lesions may not be completely removed during surgery. After the operation, you need to take levothyroxine sodium tablets as prescribed by your doctor to supplement thyroid hormones exogenously to maintain the normal physiological functions of the human body.

2. No need to take medicine:

1. Papillary thyroid carcinoma: Papillary thyroid carcinoma grows slowly and has little impact on surrounding organs. It does not require the removal of thyroid tissue during surgery, and no medication is required after surgery.

2. Follicular thyroid carcinoma: Distant metastasis of follicular thyroid carcinoma is rare. During surgery, the entire thyroid gland needs to be removed. After surgery, you may need to take levothyroxine sodium tablets as prescribed by your doctor for replacement therapy.

Patients with incomplete thyroid cancer removal do not need to take medicine if there is no radiation exposure to the neck. Since thyroid cancer is not highly malignant, the prognosis is good and regular checkups are sufficient. Patients should pay attention to rest, avoid staying up late and overwork, and can exercise appropriately to strengthen their physical fitness.
