Is there a relationship between prostate cancer and male obesity?

Obesity = higher risk of cancer

The researchers studied 194 men with prostate cancer and an equal number of men being treated for noncancerous prostate enlargement, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BpH). They found that while simply being overweight did not necessarily increase the risk of prostate cancer, obesity still increased the risk by 2.5 times.

In the study, French researchers wanted to rule out certain confounding factors that have led to conflicting results from various studies, including age and race. All subjects were age-matched white men who were treated for prostate cancer at the same hospital. In Western countries, where obesity has reached epidemic levels, dietary changes and other public health measures that directly prevent obesity may reduce the likelihood of other problems caused by obesity, including prostate cancer, the researchers said.

How to prevent obesity

Obese people are at high risk of prostate cancer, especially for middle-aged and elderly people. A scientific and reasonable diet structure, good eating habits, and beneficial physical activities are important measures to reduce obesity rates. We should strengthen publicity and education on obesity and behavioral intervention, increase the weight loss awareness of overweight and obese people, master scientific and effective weight loss methods, and prevent the occurrence of obesity and related diseases while improving living standards.
