Can gastric cancer be treated with radiotherapy? Not the main method

Radiotherapy is an effective method for treating cancer, but it is not a primary treatment method for curing gastric cancer. It is usually used as an auxiliary treatment. Especially when radiotherapy is used alone, it is generally not used. Under normal circumstances, anterior and posterior penetrating field irradiation is used, and intraoperative radiotherapy is suitable for cases with clinical stages II and III.

There are many treatments for gastric cancer, and radiotherapy is one of them. The purpose of this treatment is to provide auxiliary treatment before and after surgery. Many patients do not understand this treatment method in time and think that they can receive radiotherapy after becoming ill. So, can radiotherapy be used to treat the disease? Let’s find out, can gastric cancer be treated with radiotherapy?
The main purpose of radiotherapy for gastric cancer is to provide auxiliary treatment and palliative treatment before and after surgery, as well as to improve the patient's quality of life. Radiotherapy also requires that the patient meets certain conditions, which means that not all gastric cancers can be treated with radiotherapy. Radiotherapy is an effective auxiliary treatment for cancer patients. Reasonable treatment techniques, radiation doses, and treatment plans should be used while strictly mastering the indications. Radiotherapy has a certain therapeutic effect and can play an auxiliary and palliative role for patients.
Generally speaking, radiotherapy is not the only treatment for cancer, especially the use of radiotherapy alone, which is rarely used by doctors. In the clinical treatment of gastric cancer, local and regional lymph node recurrence after surgery is the main reason for treatment failure, generally accounting for about 35%-45% of postoperative pathology.
Although there are clinical reports on radiotherapy for gastric cancer, there are few reports on large-scale clinical studies on radiotherapy for gastric cancer. At present, radiotherapy has not been widely accepted as a routine adjuvant treatment for gastric cancer after surgery. Gastric cancer itself is a moderately radiosensitive tumor.
Doctors believe that intraoperative radiotherapy is used for stage I and stage II cases of clinical staging, patients who can undergo surgical resection and have no distant metastasis. For cardiac cancer, because the lower esophagus is invaded, it is difficult to fully expose the lesion site, and irradiation often cannot include all the parts that need to be treated. At this time, radiotherapy during surgery is not recommended. In general, trans-field irradiation with before-after contrast is used, and the kidneys will be protected during the treatment process.
