3. Treatment of postoperative complications of tumors:

(1) Bile reflux gastritis after gastric cancer surgery:

It accounts for three to five percent of gastric cancer cases after surgery.

The diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine is mostly disharmony between the gallbladder and stomach, which is treated by soothing the liver and promoting bile secretion, harmonizing the stomach and relieving counterflow, and using modified Xiao Chaihu Decoction.

(2) Dumping syndrome after gastrointestinal surgery: diarrhea, abdominal distension, and urgent need to defecate, accompanied by pale complexion, fatigue, palpitations, dizziness, sweating, weak or rapid pulse. The symptoms will disappear on their own in about 1 hour.

The TCM diagnosis is spleen deficiency and weak qi, and stomach disharmony and descent. The treatment is to strengthen the spleen and replenish qi, harmonize the stomach and reduce adverse reactions.

(3) Swelling of the affected limb after breast cancer surgery:

Breast cancer surgery involves the removal of a large amount of tissue and poor lymphatic return, which can lead to edema of the affected upper limb. As time goes by, the treatment effect becomes worse.

Ready-made medicines include Xiangsha Liujunzi Decoction and Xiangsha Yangwei Pills.

2. Bone marrow suppression caused by chemotherapy:

For bone marrow suppression-induced decreases in white blood cells, platelets or red blood cells, Chinese medicine believes that it is mostly caused by damage to the spleen and stomach, which damages the qi and blood over time, and in severe cases, damages the kidneys. Chinese medicines that strengthen the spleen and kidneys, replenish qi and nourish blood are often used, such as yam, white atractylodes, astragalus, ginseng, wolfberry, Millettia reticulata, angelica, raw rehmannia, donkey-hide gelatin, dodder seed, Ligustrum lucidum, and psoralea. Commonly used prescriptions include Jianpi Yishen Chongji, Zhenqi Fuzheng Capsules, Shiquan Dabu Decoction, and Danggui Buxue Decoction.

You can try using liver and kidney nourishing medicines such as fried bupleurum, gardenia, salvia miltiorrhiza, angelica, wolfberry, Ligustrum lucidum, Poria, mistletoe, polygonatum, wolfberry, etc.

Some chemotherapy drugs can cause damage to heart function. They should be used with Chinese medicines that replenish qi and nourish blood, and promote blood circulation and unblock meridians, such as astragalus, angelica, Chuanxiong, salvia miltiorrhiza, red peony root, peach kernel, etc., or prescriptions such as Shengmai San, etc.

4. Other side effects caused by chemotherapy:

Phlebitis: Apply Shengji Yuhong ointment externally.

Extravasation of chemotherapy drugs: apply cold compress with decoction of Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron chinense and Polygonum cuspidatum.

Peripheral neuritis: vincristine and etoposide can cause peripheral neuritis, which can cause numbness and fatigue in the extremities, or hyporeflexia of the knee tendon and intestinal paralysis in severe cases. It is often treated with the method of promoting blood circulation and activating collaterals, such as Millettia reticulata, Acanthopanax cortex, papaya, Clematis chinensis, Pueraria root, Astragalus, and Angelica sinensis.

5. The synergistic effect of Chinese medicine on chemical drugs:

Studies have found that although some tonic drugs and blood-activating and stasis-removing drugs have no direct inhibitory and killing effects on tumor cells, their combined use with certain chemotherapy drugs can significantly enhance the killing effects on tumor cells.

For treatments based mainly on traditional Chinese medicine, appropriate Western medicine auxiliary treatments can still be selected according to the needs of the patient, such as local radiotherapy for bone metastasis, endocrine therapy for breast cancer, biological therapy for renal cancer, etc. The choice of any treatment method should be based on the patient's efficacy as the first consideration, and the selected treatment should also be the optimal method of Chinese and Western medicine.

Patients should usually pay attention to keeping a good mood, avoid being angry, eat more vegetables and fruits, keep bowel movements smooth, do not eat too much, eat 70% to 80% full, eat less beef, mutton, pork, dog meat, avoid eating greasy and heavy food, strong alcohol and spicy fried food, eat light and nutritious food. Avoid excessive force at work and when doing housework, do not hold heavy objects, do not do strenuous exercise, so as not to increase abdominal pressure and cause tumor rupture and bleeding. You can often do low-intensity exercise such as long-distance walking, and observe the size of the tumor regularly.
